Dear Editor,

 

Surfing the internet recently to clarify certain issues before writing this letter, to my surprise, I found that there were more than twenty-five "I'm Alive" songs ranging from those sung by Seal, Cut 'n' Move, Vernard Johnson, and Circle Jerks to others by Jackson Browne and as far back as the Hollies.

 

When Kristian Lundin and Andreas Carisson composed the catchy and rhythmic "I'm Alive" for Celine Dion to sing to show how Americans survived the pains of the September 11 attack on the Twin Towers in Manhattan neither the two composers nor Dion had the faintest idea that one day the words of this now famous song would make headlines in Guyana albeit in a different context.

 

The recent disclosure in sections of the media that during the recently concluded Claims and Objections period, thousands of eligible voters were objected to by the PNC on the ground that they were "not found" and therefore should be struck from the voters' list was rebuffed by the PPP/C response that 98% of those people were alive, well and kicking.

 

But the most distasteful aspect of this claim is that most of the "not found" persons are supporters of the PPP.

 

It is the same subterfuge that the PNC used in 2001 and every previous elections to disenfranchise thousands who they feared would vote against them. In Celine Dion's "I'm Alive" she sings;

 

"When you call on me

 

When I hear you breathe

 

I get wings to fly

 

I feel that I'm alive."

 

These words were reflective of the enthusiastic res-ponse by those persons who the PNC attempted to disenfranchise during the Claims and Objections period when they were found to be alive and well by the PPP.

 

"I'm Alive" translated in a political context is reflective of the pain and relief experienced by those persons who the PNC claimed could not be found but thanks to PPP activists were found and exposed to the public for all to see.
