Kwon was later handcuffed and ordered into custody while he awaits sentencing. A minister accused of extorting Celine Dion's husband was convicted by a jury of all counts Monday. Ae Kwon faces up to 12 years in prison, and he could also be deported to South Korea as a result of a 2002 plot by Kwon and his wife to extort Rene Angelil. He could also receive probation. "He kept saying to me, 'I don't understand,' " Kwon's attorney, Lisa Rasmussen, said just moments after the verdict was read. "He doesn't understand what he did wrong." Jurors declined comment afterward. District Judge Jackie Glass ordered Kwon, of Pasadena, Calif., to be taken into custody until his sentencing in approximately 60 days. Angelil's attorney, David Chesnoff, said the verdict was appropriate. "Mr. Angelil and his counsel appreciate the efforts of law enforcement and the district attorney's office in bringing this gentleman to justice," Chesnoff said. "It sends a message that, just because you are well-known, it doesn't mean you can be extorted." According to authorities, Kwon and his wife, Yun Sung, tried to extort some $20 million from Angelil. The couple said Angelil raped Sung in a hotel room at the Imperial Palace in 2000. Angelil has always denied any improprieties with the woman. When Sung and Kwon first went to Angelil to demand money in 2000, Angelil paid the couple $2 million as part of a confidential settlement. Angelil also agreed to apologize and undergo a blood test. But authorities said despite the settlement, Kwon and Sung went back to Angelil's attorneys two years later and demanded more money. The couple also filed a police report and a civil lawsuit against Angelil, making the rape accusations public. In addition, Sung and Kwon turned over to police in 2002 what they said was evidence of a sexual assault: a broken fingernail, pubic hairs and a towel they contended had Angelil's semen on it. Las Vegas police originally opened a sex assault investigation, but it was later shut down after Sung and Kwon failed to produce a dress to police that the couple said also had Angelil's DNA on it. Angelil's attorneys subsequently reported to police suspicions that Angelil was being extorted, and a meeting was set up between the couple's attorneys and Angelil's attorneys in early 2003. A Las Vegas police officer posed as Angelil's business partner during the meeting. During the meeting which was videotaped -- the couple vowed through their attorneys to go to the media if they weren't paid. They were arrested at the conclusion of the meeting. Sung was convicted of extortion in October and sentenced to up to 72 months in prison. During last week's trial, Kwon took the witness stand in his own defense, saying he never wanted Angelil's money. Instead, he said, he wanted an apology. "The most important thing at the time was the safety of my family; and since Rene Angelil raped my wife, I wanted from him true repentance and apology," Kwon said. The jury in the courtroom of District Judge Jackie Glass took a little less than five hours to convict Kwon. Prosecutor L.J. O'Neale praised the jury's work. "Obviously, it was the correct verdict," O'Neale said. "The jury rendered the right decision." O'Neale said he chose not to call Angelil as a witness because Angelil was not a witness to the acts directly related to the extortion. All demands for money were made of Angelil through his attorneys. "Second, I was concerned with the potential for turning (Kwon's trial) into a circus with side issues that shouldn't be in front of the jury," the prosecutor said. Glass ruled she couldn't compel Angelil to testify because a subpoena wasn't served properly. She also repeatedly reiterated during her rulings that she didn't want Kwon's extortion trial to become a proceeding that focused on Angelil's civil litigation with Kwon and Sung. But Rasmussen said she believes Angelil was given special treatment from the beginning. She said the rape allegation was never fully investigated as it should have been, and that her client's rights were violated when she wasn't allowed to question Angelil on the witness stand. "Mr. Angelil was treated with kid gloves by everyone," Rasmussen said. "This was all about Mr. Angelil, not about Mr. Kwon, the defendant." Rasmussen vowed to appeal the conviction and Kwon is expected to be sentenced in 60 days. Kwon is currently deemed a legal permanent resident of the United States by the Immigration and Naturalization Service. O'Neale said because Kwon has now been convicted of an aggravated felony, the INS is required to immediately process Kwon for deportation. Quote

Bag Posted April 12, 2006 at 04:32 PM Posted April 12, 2006 at 04:32 PM Hi The first thing Rene did wrong was to go to the room, as i read some of your replies. The second was to hand over money, its like saying you had done it. He should of gone to the police himself when they asked for money first. Innocent until proven guilty How people can think they can cry rape can get away with it knowing its not true. Its like the story of the boy who cried wolf to many times, no-one believed him. They are only trying it on for the money Knowing who Rene is, they forget the lifes they could ruin in the process. I hope he gets what he deserves, lose the key to his handcuffs, and take his wife with him. Quote
