I did have time to write the interview. I have the 9 first parts. I'm French, and the best way for me to learn English is to hear a lot of interviews (from Celine or others, as Lost) and write the texts. Therefore, I'm getting used to the american accent.

I think it will take quite a lot of time, and also, there will be some blanks (for I am not an English-speaking person), but send me a message, and as soon as possible, I'll send the text back.

James Horner: Underneath the emotion of seeing her perform or sing or comes out of her voice, there’s a whole factory there in her head that gets her something (?) place like a football player or something. It doesn’t just happen.

 

David Foster: Who (?) that she would become that person that would be a great (?) You know, we didn’t know (?) it was just this little skinny girl from Canada who just happened to sing better than anybody else on the planet.

René: What struck me was their soul that this little girl had in her heart and in her voice.

 

Celine: I was never like a robot, like “you’re gonna sing that song, you’re gonna be dressed this way, you’re gonna say that, let’s go!” I never felt that at all. Never. Even though for some people, you know, I’m delivering the merchandise pretty well and all the time and … but they always gave me room to decide and talk, feeling, you know, “I like that song but I think I prefer this one” or “I’m not really comfortable dressing up this way”.

Celine: But I have to be honest with you: René is a very, very smart man. But when he had me do things for example “Oh Celine, I’m gonna do this, it’s gonna be spectacular!” it felt right. Any time we have the same vision. We loved show business both of us and then it turned out to be we loved each other.

 

David Foster: This is one the great love stories of all time. They are the perfect match and I can honestly say I get around Celine a lot, she (?) good looking man, young, old (?) I’ve never ever ever even seen her (?). Ever!

David Foster: It’s a love story that should be written about, let’s say career that is so textbook… If you want the perfect manager and the perfect artist, they should teach this in university.

 

René: Fortunately, the fact that I discovered Celine when she was 12… You know, when you’re 12 years old, 13, you don’t (?) (there was a problem with the video so I couldn’t catch the word) too much about the business. She put all her confidence in me. So we don’t have any problems with artist/manager. Sometimes we have conflicts husband and wife, which is normal, and we always work it out of course, but once we get home, our whole life is dedicated to our son René-Charles. He’s the love of our life and we never talk about business in our house.

Tommy Mottola: Celine’s the most undiva diva I’ve ever met. This is the most normal down-to-earth fun person, one of the real real people that I’ve ever worked with.

 

Franco Dragone: People like Celine because Celine she is not perfect. Celine is above the perfection, it’s on the side of the perfection.

Elysa Gardner: Prior to Titanic, I think Celine Dion was someone who is seen as an up-and-coming diva and gonna … who had a magnificent voice, people were already talking about her as a possible successor to Barbra Streisand. But I don’t think anybody foresaw what Titanic did for Celine Dion’s career.

Randy Jackson: When Celine Dion went into Vegas and she started her Caesar’s run I think a lot of her other contemporaries would probably be saying “Oh, what she’s doing, this is crazy”, “I don’t know, this (?) she’s gonna be in one city and people are come in”. I think she’s helped to usher in the new Las Vegas. Cuz I think that’s gonna become like a (?) days, the thing to do is in the place to be and I think a lot of artists will follow soon. It was a brilliant idea, it was great that she did it and I think she’s probably really enjoying herself.

Michel Dion: I’m stage manager. I’m not just an employer, I’m her brother. My part is to take care of Celine from the elevator to the stage, everything on the stage until she left the house. I’m here and with her and I’m very proud of it to be beside her every night.

Michel Dion: Las Vegas. Can you imagine 5 nights a week, 200 shows per year, for 3 years, and maybe 4 years now, and it’s always ?full bag? because it’s not easy. She can do that, it’s unbelievable!

 

Celine: My voice, my songs, my career, … Yes I worked hard and … it was a dream. But my life is what I’m the most proud of. The way that I grew up, the way I was raised.

Michel: It’s a long family! Right! First, our Dad Adhémar, Mom Thérèse, Denise, Clément, Claudette, Liette, Michel, Louise, Jacques, Daniel, Ghislaine, Linda, Manon, Paul, Pauline, those are twins, and Celine. Hope I didn’t forget nobody! I hope! I hope!

Michel: My dad was an accordion player. Mom was playing violin. Brothers and soeurs (that’s hat he says, but it’s sisters) all singing like the old song, old folksong.

Celine: You know, when I was like 3 or 4 years old, when I was a baby, my brothers and sisters, they used to put me on the kitchen table and I used to sing and dance for them.]

 

Michel: And when the Beatles came out, that was our kind of music for, you know, the teenage people.

Celine: From the backyard to the basement, it was (?), (?) Brothers, the Beatles, Stevie Wonder. It was definitely not, let’s put it this way, the ballads, the soft ballads. It was pretty (?) it was pretty rock and roll and I loved it.

Michel: From 3 years old, she was singing with us. And she asked one question to Mom one day. Mom asked her … “You have to go to school Celine” She said “I don’t wanna go to school !!!” She said “Yes, you have to go to school because later you have to find something to do, you know, like a work and…” “No, I wanna be a singer”.

Michel: Mom said “Yeah you wanna be a singer like your other brother and sister ? If you wanna do that, you have to learn how to sing.” And from there, everybody in the family was taking care of Celine, from 10 years old to now. A teacher for her voice and all those things so … We knew she was certainly gonna be a great singer.

 

 

René: I started in show business I was 19 years old, I was part of a group, we were like the French Beatles. Of course, I had a lot of hair.

 

Sir George Martin: I heard about it but he didn’t tell directly. I think he was probably too ashamed to!

Michel: He was (?) by the way. He was one of the ?famest? fan in the 60’s. So … yeah I remember René and … singing and doing his “Je suis fou”. That was great ! (Laughs)

 

René: It lasted about 10 years, and then, right away, I started producing some artists, managing artists. At the time I met Celine, I just finished managing a singer that was very very popular in the province of Quebec and she was like Celine’s family idol. They saw my name there on the record and that’s how they came to me.

 

[Celine: The first song that I ever recorded was written by my mother]

 

René: When I heard the tape the first time, I couldn’t believe she was 12. That’s why I was curious to hear her sing live.

 

[Celine in studio: When I met René the first time, he made me sing in front of him because he heard the tape “Oh yeah, OK, but can you do this live, can this little girl sing for real ?” So I went to (?) and he asked me to sing so I said “All right”. And he cried, so … I said “I got him !”]

René : I’m a gambler you know, but the biggest gamble I ever took was the first one with Celine. I took a very big risk by mortgaging my house. I had no money at that time, this was the only way I could produce an album with Celine. And of course it paid off right away, the first album was a big hit. You know I don’t recommend to everyone that thinks that they know somebody who has talent to mortgage their house because most of the time they’re gonna be losers, but … in my case, the gamble paid off.

Celine : The turning point for me was the talent of my mother who wrote me my first song, who knocked on the right door. It takes a lot for a mother because if it takes off, if it goes, it’s like she’s not only giving me wind under my wings but she’s…ready to fly with me and letting me go. She definitely wanted me to do it well. “If you wanna do it, you do it well. There’s no way you can do it in clubs and …” I don’t think she would’ve stand it. It would’ve been so hard. And … So she knocked on his door and … And I trust, I always trust to my Mom … she’s my idol! She’s the person I look up to as a … as a woman.

Celine: One day I was a baby, one day I was a woman. I go through this on TV live. That’s a lotta pressure!

René : The first song her mother wrote was a Number 1 hit in Quebec, the first record we did in France became Number 1. From the very start, she found success which is very rare!

Celine: First real show that I did, I was 14 years old, and, you know, on a real stage with a real microphone, and real gorgeous musicians and everything! I was 14 years old and of course the whole show was in French but I did sing one English song on my show and I think, I’m sure you know the song, do you know that one “What a feeling!” You know that song ? While I was singing the song, every night people were dancing with me “How you go Celine girl!” “I can have it all, What a feel…” and I didn’t understand a word of what I was singing at that time! So I said to myself “Listen to yourself, girl, come on, you have to go to school to learn English!]

René: She was watching Michael Jackson performing when he had his big hit Thriller. She thought he was fantastic like a lot of people and she told me “You know, I can see myself singing with them” and I said “Yeah, you could, but first you have to learn how to speak English”.

René: And I made a deal with her. If she could speak English and actually do an interview in English, I would get her a record deal with the same company as Michael Jackson.

Celine: You start at 12 years old, they see you, if they like you, they still wanna see you at 12 and 13. They don’t wanna see you growing up. Changing your hair, getting sexier… Where’s the little girl ? You know, where is… You know, where is Celine ?

Celine : They love you so much, they want to protect you. You were their possession. Whatever you do, you are in their living-room, in their kitchen, in their bedroom, you live with them. Then, I changed, I grew up. But I go through this on TV live, that’s a lotta pressure!

 

René: Of course, when she became older, she had a lot of confidence, she got to know all the business side, all the artistic side, but there’s always this trust that was always there since I know her.

 

Celine: And then I had … a love … that I couldn’t share because I was a little too young. I was (?) my manager so much, I fell in love with him.

 

René: In 1988, we were in Dublin actually for the Eurovision contest that she won over there in Europe, and that’s when our romance started. You know, I was much older than she was, sure I’m still much older (laughs). So, she wanted to tell the world that we were in love.

 

Celine: I have my dreams, I had my loves as well.

 

René: But at that time, first of all, she had never recorded in English, she was still a very young artist and I was afraid that people would say …

 

Celine: “You know, that manager, you’d better be careful! He’s grown-up man, he’s been married twice, he’s got children”

 

René: I thought it was would ruin her image. You know, a young girl of 20 in love with an old man of 46!

 

Celine: “Not our Celine, in love with her manager, no way! No way! She needs this prince of charm, of her age!” That’s exactly what my mother thought for me. That’s exactly what my mother wanted for me!

 

René: So we kept it secret for like 4 years and funny enough when we revealed it, it started for her to go … to have hits after hits and being a ?household? name. So on the contrary, it didn’t affect her, it helped her career! (laughs)

 

Randy Jackson: I was an Executive at Columbia Records and I remember Tommy Mottola saying “Here’s a new girl from Canada that was unbelievably amazing”.

Tommy Mottola: When I heard Celine’s voice for the first time, it really got my attention. And I heard something very special and unique.

 

René: A very influent producer David Foster believed in her. We had sent him tapes.

 

David Foster: I got this tape, we put it in, and it was like (?) it’s like when your hair (?) I don’t know how Celine was but you’d have to be an idiot not to know that this was gonna be one of the greatest singers of all time!

Randy Jackson: I got a call from David Foster to come and play bass. So I go in the studio in Malibu and (?) to hear this, I mean, this girl’s (?) she’s incredible, you know, she’s Canadian like me”. David was saying “Man, you gonna love this girl!” He puts (?) I go “Wow! Who is that ?” He said “this is what we’re recording today, this is Celine Dion”. I go “Oh my God !”

Jay: When I first (?) show biz …Mike Douglas show. In all those days, you do a show and sometimes they save a tape, but sometimes they’d (?) cuz (?) shows (?) again.

Jay: I’ll always remember Mike Douglas say “There’s a new singer (?) Barbra Streisand. And she came and did a song and she was pretty good. René: When Celine started recording in English, a lot of people they were saying “Yes, Celine Dion, what does she sing ?” You know, she was just starting, she had a few hits but people did not associate her name with the songs. And then came Beauty And The Beast.

Randy Jackson: Beauty And The Beast.

 

Elysa Gardner: Beauty And The Beast was not the first English-language song that Celine recorded obviously, but I think it really resonated with the public because it’s a beautiful song, it was a Disney movie, hit movie, she did it with an established RNB star Peabo Bryson.

 

Randy Jackson: And the singer Peabo, he was the RNB crooner at that time. I think it was the perfect combination (?) forces matching. I mean I can hear it in my head now, it just sounds so amazing.

Peabo Bryson: The first time I ever laid eyes on Celine Dion was to record Beauty And The Beast. We didn’t record it like you would normally do, one person records (?) the other person sings (?) it. (?) to sing it together but (?) try (?) later. They didn’t want that for some reason. They put (?) so that my vocal would not link into hers and hers would not link into mine. Well we did see each other and we were close. I was standing and watching her sing, and I was going … I was going towards the glass, I found myself going towards the glass just listening because she’s hypnotic like that, she draws you in. And then I gave her some of me.

Celine: Singing with Peabo Bryson which was an established performer, artist, was a tremendous turning point in my career. I remember taking the cab in New York and having Beauty And The Beast play and the chauffeur without knowing that it was me singing and he sang the whole song from beginning to end ! Made me feel pretty good!

Elysa Gardner: They both had such particular voices and technically so crystal-clear, I remember hearing the voice and thinking “God, who is that woman ?”

 

Peabo: You can’t sing with Celine and not fall a little bit in love with her. You can’t.

Peabo: (?) so high (?) so that there wasn’t anything that she couldn’t (?) And I’m not sure she could do that!

 

Tommy: We set (?) strategic tactical plan with Celine to figure out the correct building blocks to build a huge career. And one of the first opportunities that came along was Beauty And The Beast. And then I put a classic record in the billion-dollar-worldwide grossing film with Disney, and there you have the first launching (?)

 

David Foster: I was a very (?) song. I believe it was her first Number 1 Billboard hit, followed by The Power of Love which was her first Number 1 as a solo artist, not a duet.

Celine: I kept my long hair for them and fixing me teeth for them, and keeping my love story secret for them … now I’m gonna be at the happiest of my life and I’m gonna keep it away from them ? No.

Deon Ridley: First of all, I’m sitting backstage and I’m watching her sing her song every night. The audience is just going crazy because they know, the know the melody of the song. There’s tears, there’re people crying. There’re people living the deal like “OHH”. You know, just overwhelmed because that song is just one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

David Foster: Every singer hopes and prays that they will have a theatrical song. And when you really think about it, not that many people do.

 

Celine: I don’t write my songs, I am at the mercy of songs, I’m waiting for songs.

 

Mark Juliano: Celine and René used to like (?) this very sweet and there were some people that wanted to have Celine listen to a song that they had an idea for.

James Horner: The (?) song when I was writing the score cuz James Cameron, the director, told me that he didn’t want, definitely, didn’t want a song in his movie.

 

René: People were saying, you know, it’s (?) that Titanic’s gonna sink. Even though there was a bad line, James Horner told us that he was convinced it would be a big hit. And I had a lot of confidence in James Horner.

 

James Horner: In writing, I got to the end of the film and I was afraid just another orchestral cue would be boring. I mean, it’d had whatever was an hour of orchestral music that’s big sinking etc… So I made all the little threads that I had been using throughout the film come together as one long thread for a song. But … like, we’re opening (?)

 

Celine: James started to play the song on the piano and he’s a wonderful writer, but if I may say that he’s probably not the best singer out there.

 

René: And Celine was not impressed. Not impressed with singing.

 

Celine: And I kept saying to René, in the back, I was like “No ! Not gonna sing that song, I don’t like that song!”

 

René: And … so I told James “Look, you’d better stop because you’re not helping here. What we should do is if you could do a track to the song, Celine will do a demo”. So this is what happened. We went in a studio.

 

Tommy Mottola: And as she started singing, everyone started feeling goose bumps.

 

James Horner: Everybody was sort of in tears when she was singing. It’s just so beautiful.

 

Tommy: By the time she was finished, everyone knew we had created a classic.

James: And I waited to the right moment to spring it on my director and one day, he was in a particularly good mood and I asked him to listen to something and he said “Is that Celine Dion singing ?” I said “Yeah”. And then the rest is sort of history.

Celine: So I went there and I sang the song. They kept the demo and the actual real record actual, the one you hear is the demo. I never re-sang for a record that song. I’ve sung the song many many many times, I’m still singing it, so… I’m glad I did it! I was wrong! I didn’t wanna do it. I’m glad that they didn’t listen to me!

 

Sir George Martin: If you record a great song that is a very famous song, and in fact you make it your own, obviously it’s a great advantage to you. You know, because you sell lots of records you become a more famous for it But it can be a burden. … But it’s a bad burden to have, really.

 

David Foster: And the blessing is obvious, I mean My Heart Will Go On catapulted her to, you know, the song fed the movie, the movie fed the song, it was like the most syllogistic coming together of a movie and song that I can remember. But then there was (?) Saturday Night Live that’s just making fun of you and people love to hate the song, they hate or love the song.

Ana: I first did the character on Saturday Night Live right after Titanic hit the world in a massive explosion. She had just sort of immersed culture enough that they were just ready to laugh at her and the entire audience went crazy.

René: When we saw that imitation that they did on the Saturday Night Live, personally I felt like she’s a big star now. Celine is. I was very very happy about that, very honored actually that they would do that.

Tommy: When you have achieved that, you have finally made it (?) on the top, not to the top, but (?) on the top. I thought it was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen and Celine, without question, is the greatest singer in the world.

René: She became much more popular and we toured around the world that particular year, play in stadiums.

Carole King : The song The Reason was not written for Celine. It was written for (?) Smith. Then somehow (?) sent to Celine and she loved it.

Sir George Martin: She’s very easy to work with. She’s…she’s (?) performer. You ask her to do something she does it.

 

Celine: George Martin, he’s like a prince. He doesn’t look like a rock n’roll producer who’s been working with The Beatles, he looks like a sir who lives in a castle.

 

Sir George Martin: In this case, working on that particular song, I was working with 2 divas because Carole King (?) from the moment she started making records which is way back in the (?) 80’s like me. This (?) American came (?) into the studio. And the sessions very very easy indeed. It was a good record !

Carole: Celine is a professional. And so whoever she works with, she’s gonna be great. We did this first VH1 Divas show.

 

Randy: Shania was on there, Mariah was on, Gloria Estefan was on.

 

Carole: And I was on the show. As well I was a surprise Diva and only because Celine had asked me to join her for the show, and then they asked me to be one of the Divas.

 

Randy: And Aretha was definitely serving them up that night.

Carole: We did Natural Woman at the end of the show and that’s Aretha’s song and Aretha, brightly, you know, is the star of that song. But here we are on the stage full of divas and Aretha’s, you know, as she will tend to do, God bless her, sort of taking over! And (?) where Celine was supposed to sing, here’s Aretha still singing.

Randy: Celine definitely did her thing and held her on, I mean, she was amazing that night. I mean, you talk about the gospel church power vocally, Aretha Franklin, I mean, one of the most legendary voices of all time. Celine definitely did her thing. She worked it out.

 

Carole: And I love Celine’s attitude because she’s got (?) she’s got fight and she’s just got up there and when Aretha sang (?) so Celine was (?) Celine just got right up on the phone, answered her!

Celine: And I just respected her so much for the classy way that she handled that situation.

 

Elysa Gardner: Her lack of affectation I think cuts through everything she does and that might be why people shared in her struggle when her husband was sick. People felt that they could relate to her maybe in a way that they couldn’t had Diana Ross been going through, something like that.

René : Well in 1999, you know, I was diagnosed with cancer.

Celine : I’ll never forget that it was in ( ?). We were there in this very small hotel room with each other, as lovers and as golfers. He was looking forward for this moment so much. You know, us playing in (?), man! Forget it, nobody else does for him, he was like we were the only ones in the world, he was like such a big fan.

And the next morning in the plane, he noticed a huge bump in his neck. And me, with my tonsils and my vocal cords and my neck, it’s like…I’m used to manipulate and touch and feel and it’s sorrow, it’s not sorrow it’s big and…it’s a cold, it’s an infection, there’s a nut stuck there, I’m kinda used to it, and I said “When you swallow, there’s a hurt”. And he said no. “Are you sure” and I kinda pressed on it. I said “Are you sure it doesn’t hurt ?” and he said no. Well what’s it doing about it. You know, we’ll have it checked. But I was a little nervous. (?) (problem with the video again) at that moment. I never thought cancer. Never! Never, never.

We were there in Dallas. I was on tour. My family flew, my parents, René’s children, he had all the support he needed. And we took it from there.

 

Michel: René (?) the announce that René was sick. But René, he told Dave to tell us “Life has to continue and we have to go on with the show. That was a great spirit and Celine was there too and of course she was crying and she’s “OK, guys, we have the show to do now, Let’s go!” and we did a great show.

Tommy: During the tour when René was going through his treatments, they’d even communicate while she was on stage like her touching her nose which is her way of saying “I love you” to René who was watching it at home.

And then she pulled back and gave him the time that he needed.

Celine: I really wanted to show him my support, I wanted him to know that I was in charge and now “You took care of me so much for so many years. Can I do something for you ? Let me do something for you”.

Tommy: The great thing about Celine is this amazing partnership with René. Not only is it her husband and her love but a man who understands all of the dynamics of what it takes to become a star and maintain it.

 

Celine: You know, I always felt René so strong. He knows it all. René ? Phhoo!! He’s OK! You know, he’s the manager! I felt something so weak in him, he was lost. And he had me, in a way, and cancer. And I said “It was given to you because you need to go through it. You still have a decision, you still have a choice. So what do you mean “I still have a choice” ? You still have a choice! You go through it strong, like “you want to cure yourself and you gonna get out perfectly”, or you say every day “Why me, I don’t understand, I’ve been generous all my life” Let’s go with it. We’re meant… And it had given for the first time control of my life as well.

 

[Celine: What I want is to do a show before I take a break. I don’t know how long I’m gonna take a break, but I need a balance in my life]

 

Michel: That break came right on time because she’s on tour for…wow…10 years I think. On tour is very, very demanding, it’s tough!

 

Elysa Gardner: Celine Dion might have made some people chuckle with the way she kinda went out at the peak of her career, to kinda bow out for a while, and as is usual, (?) spectacle big performance kind of ending one millennium (?) in another, very Celine Dion like.

 

René: The decision to stop at the end of 99 was to start a family.

 

Michel: A lot of time, René was not with us. So si (if in English) René was in Montreal or somewhere else doing business, and she was like in Europe doing shows and day after day and…You know, it’s not very easy. And to do a family, you know, when the husband is very far or (laughs) it’s very difficult!

 

[Celine in 97: We’re trying. We’re trying for a long time now]

 

René: And the doctors didn’t have any particular answers, you know, they were saying there’s stress, there… travelling… pressure.

 

[Celine in 97: Doesn’t seem to want to happen, but you know, I say to myself “Celine, you’re so lucky. There’s so many things happening to you now. You can’t have it all! Don’t push your luck, honey! Don’t, don’t… Don’t say… You know, don’t start that! If it happens, it happens.]

 

Celine: This is what I wanted the most. A marriage, a wonderful husband, a wonderful father and a family. It took us like 6 years before having some help and we got very lucky it worked for us.

 

René: When Celine was pregnant, you know, that was the best time. The best time! She loved being pregnant and she actually missed being pregnant! Our child was due for February 14, Valentine’s Day. And about 3 weeks before that, she said “I feel something’s going on”. It wasn’t like (?) by the way, it was… she didn’t panic, or…shouted or anything. So we went to the hospital and sure enough, the baby… you know, the baby was born that day!

 

We are pleased to announce that Celine Dion and René Angélil are thrilled with the birth of their son René-Charles at 1 a.m. on Thursday, January 25th, 2001 at Palm’s West Hospital. Celine and René-Charles who weighted 6 pounds 8 ounces, are doing marvellously well and are in perfect health.

 

Celine: He was not even in my arms yet and I was totally different.

Randy Jackson: She really pays attention to the music like a classical violinist does when they are interpreting something.

David Foster: Who knew that back in the day that she would become that person that would be a great role model You know, we didn’t know being that shewas just this little skinny girl from Canada who just happened to sing better than anybody else on the planet.

René: What struck me was their soul that this little girl had in her heart and in her voice.

 

Celine: I was never like a robot, like “you’re gonna sing that song, you’re gonna be dressed this way, you’re gonna say that, let’s go!” I never felt that at all. Never. Even though for some people, you know, I’m delivering the merchandise pretty well and all the time and … but they always gave me room to decide and talk, feeling, you know, “I like that song but I think I prefer this one” or “I’m not really comfortable dressing up this way”.

Celine: But I have to be honest with you: René is a very, very smart man. But when he had me do things for example “Oh Celine, I’m gonna do this, it’s gonna be spectacular!” it felt right. Any time we have the same vision. We loved show business both of us and then it turned out to be we loved each other.

 

David Foster: This is one the great love stories of all time. They are the perfect match and I can honestly say I've been around Celine a lot, she is around  good looking men, young, old whatever I’ve never ever ever even seen her bat an eye las at another man even . Ever!

David Foster: It’s a love story that should be written about, let’s say career that is so textbook… If you want the perfect manager and the perfect artist, they should teach this in university.

 

René: Fortunately, the fact that I discovered Celine when she was 12… You know, when you’re 12 years old, 13, you don’ know too much about the business. She put all her confidence in me. So we don’t have any problems with artist/manager. Sometimes we have conflicts husband and wife, which is normal, and we always work it out of course, but once we get home, our whole life is dedicated to our son René-Charles. He’s the love of our life and we never talk about business in our house.

Tommy Mottola: Celine’s the most undiva diva I’ve ever met. This is the most normal down-to-earth fun person, one of the real real people that I’ve ever worked with.

 

Franco Dragone: People like Celine because Celine she is not perfect. Celine is above the perfection, it’s on the side of the perfection.

Elysa Gardner: Prior to Titanic, I think Celine Dion was someone who is seen as an up-and-coming diva and gonna … who had a magnificent voice, people were already talking about her as a possible successor to Barbra Streisand. But I don’t think anybody foresaw what Titanic did for Celine Dion’s career.

Randy Jackson: When Celine Dion went into Vegas and she started her Caesar’s run I think a lot of her other contemporaries would probably be saying “Oh, what she’s doing, this is crazy”, “I don’t know, this (he muffles here and i dont think he actually says anything) she’s gonna be in one city and people are come in”. I think she’s helped to usher in the new Las Vegas. Cuz I think that’s gonna become like it did in the ratpack days, the thing to do is in the place to be and I think a lot of artists will follow soon. It was a brilliant idea, it was great that she did it and I think she’s probably really enjoying herself.

 

Elysa Gardner: Celine Dion, I think, people’ll still see as a voice surrounded by spectacle and a work force. This is a girl who’s been at it since she was 12 years old and maybe that is also something that endures her to her fans.

Michel Dion: I’m stage manager. I’m not just an employer, I’m her brother. My part is to take care of Celine from the elevator to the stage, everything on the stage until she left the house. I’m here and with her and I’m very proud of it to be beside her every night.

Michel Dion: Las Vegas. Can you imagine 5 nights a week, 200 shows per year, for 3 years, and maybe 4 years now, and it’s always full packed because it’s not easy. She can do that, it’s unbelievable!

 

Celine: My voice, my songs, my career, … Yes I worked hard and … it was a dream. But my life is what I’m the most proud of. The way that I grew up, the way I was raised.

Michel: Charlemagne is a little little little town, it’s something like maybe 2 mile by 2 mile.

 

Jay Leno: With her family you dont reall need an audience, you just tell the  regular audience to go home, cuz this is like, think she has 20 hundred brothers and sisters ?!!

 

Michel: It’s a long family! Right! First, our Dad Adhémar, Mom Thérèse, Denise, Clément, Claudette, Liette, Michel, Louise, Jacques, Daniel, Ghislaine, Linda, Manon, Paul, Pauline, those are twins, and Celine. Hope I didn’t forget nobody! I hope! I hope!

Michel: My dad was an accordion player. Mom was playing violin. Brothers and soeurs (that’s hat he says, but it’s sisters) all singing like the old song, old folksong.

Celine: You know, when I was like 3 or 4 years old, when I was a baby, my brothers and sisters, they used to put me on the kitchen table and I used to sing and dance for them.]

 

Michel: And when the Beatles came out, that was our kind of music for, you know, the teenage people.

Celine: From the backyard to the basement, it was Credence, BeBe Brothers, the Beatles, Stevie Wonder. It was definitely not, let’s put it this way, the ballads, the soft ballads. It was pretty edgy it was pretty rock and roll and I loved it.

Michel: From 3 years old, she was singing with us. And she asked one question to Mom one day. Mom asked her … “You have to go to school Celine” She said “I don’t wanna go to school !!!” She said “Yes, you have to go to school because later you have to find something to do, you know, like a work and…” “No, I wanna be a singer”.

Michel: Mom said “Yeah you wanna be a singer like your other brother and sister ? If you wanna do that, you have to learn how to sing.” And from there, everybody in the family was taking care of Celine, from 10 years old to now. A teacher for her voice and all those things so … We knew she was certainly gonna be a great singer.

 

 

René: I started in show business I was 19 years old, I was part of a group, we were like the French Beatles. Of course, I had a lot of hair.

 

Sir George Martin: I heard about it but he didn’t tell directly. I think he was probably too ashamed to!

Michel: He was excellent by the way. He was one of the ?famest? fan in the 60’s. So … yeah I remember René and … singing and doing his “Je suis fou”. That was great ! (Laughs)

 

René: It lasted about 10 years, and then, right away, I started producing some artists, managing artists. At the time I met Celine, I just finished managing a singer that was very very popular in the province of Quebec and she was like Celine’s family idol. They saw my name there on the record and that’s how they came to me.

 

[Celine: The first song that I ever recorded was written by my mother]

 

René: When I heard the tape the first time, I couldn’t believe she was 12. That’s why I was curious to hear her sing live.

 

[Celine in studio: When I met René the first time, he made me sing in front of him because he heard the tape “Oh yeah, OK, but can you do this live, can this little girl sing for real ?” So I went to his office and he asked me to sing so I said “All right”. And he cried, so … I said “I got him !”]

[René in the studio : Céline, c’est superbe, c’est exactement ça !]

 

René : I’m a gambler you know, but the biggest gamble I ever took was the first one with Celine. I took a very big risk by mortgaging my house. I had no money at that time, this was the only way I could produce an album with Celine. And of course it paid off right away, the first album was a big hit. You know I don’t recommend to everyone that thinks that they know somebody who has talent to mortgage their house because most of the time they’re gonna be losers, but … in my case, the gamble paid off.

Celine : The turning point for me was the talent of my mother who wrote me my first song, who knocked on the right door. It takes a lot for a mother because if it takes off, if it goes, it’s like she’s not only giving me wind under my wings but she’s…ready to fly with me and letting me go. She definitely wanted me to do it well. “If you wanna do it, you do it well. There’s no way you can do it in clubs and …” I don’t think she would’ve stand it. It would’ve been so hard. And … So she knocked on his door and … And I trust, I always trust to my Mom … she’s my idol! She’s the person I look up to as a … as a woman.

Celine: One day I was a baby, one day I was a woman. I go through this on TV live. That’s a lotta pressure!

In France, what we have in English lessons is like "How are you", "My name is...", "I was doing" or "I did"... I'm exaggerating but it's always stuff like that. I learned all by myself how to speak english (well, to be quite understood by others at least). And now I see the words that I missed, (as usual once you have the answers) it was easy. But it's still, sometimes, a little bit difficult to catch every word. So thank you very much for takingthe time to ... how can I say ... revise it ?

[Ce N’était Qu’un Rêve]

 

René : The first song her mother wrote was a Number 1 hit in Quebec, the first record we did in France became Number 1. From the very start, she found success which is very rare!

 

[From Live in Memphis:

Celine: First real show that I did, I was 14 years old, and, you know, on a real stage with a real microphone, and real gorgeous musicians and everything! I was 14 years old and of course the whole show was in French but I did sing one English song on my show and I think, I’m sure you know the song, do you know that one “What a feeling!” You know that song ? While I was singing the song, every night people were dancing with me “How you go Celine girl!” “I can have it all, What a feel…” and I didn’t understand a word of what I was singing at that time! So I said to myself “Listen to yourself, girl, come on, you have to go to school to learn English!]

The host: Celine Dion. She’s a big star in France and in her own province of Quebec. She isn’t known at all in English Canada. But the young singer could change all that soon.]

 

René: She wanted to change her look, change her style.

[ A host: Critics in France and Quebec had her called extraordinary, exceptional, a new international star. What amazes them is her voice and her age. Celine Dion is 15.]

 

René: She was watching Michael Jackson performing when he had his big hit Thriller. She thought he was fantastic like a lot of people and she told me “You know, I can see myself singing with them” and I said “Yeah, you could, but first you have to learn how to speak English”.

 

[From Live in Memphis:

Celine: So my first day of school, the teacher goes like that: “HHHHHHHow do you do ?” (Laughs) “HHHHHHHHHow are you?” (Laughs) You know, I’m not kidding you, folks, for 2 months, every day, 9 to 5, 5 days a week, she did that to me. Believe me, I hhhhhhhhad a great time!!”]

 

René: And I made a deal with her. If she could speak English and actually do an interview in English, I would get her a record deal with the same company as Michael Jackson.

 

[First interview:

Celine: My dream is …hummm…to be international star.

The host: Offstage, Celine Dion is not unlike most 14-year-old Quebecers. Here she struggles with her first English interview.

Celine: And to be able … to sing … all my life!]

 

Celine: You start at 12 years old, they see you, if they like you, they still wanna see you at 12 and 13. They don’t wanna see you growing up. Changing your hair, getting sexier… Where’s the little girl ? You know, where is… You know, where is Celine ?

Celine : They love you so much, they want to protect you. You were their possession. Whatever you do, you are in their living-room, in their kitchen, in their bedroom, you live with them. Then, I changed, I grew up. I started to wear some jeans and sexier things and I grew and I fixed my teeth a little bit and… One day I was a baby, one day I was a woman, it’s not only me that goes through this, every teenager goes through this. But I go through this on TV live, that’s a lotta pressure!

 

René: Of course, when she became older, she had a lot of confidence, she got to know all the business side, all the artistic side, but there’s always this trust that was always there since I know her.

 

Celine: And then I had … a love … that I couldn’t share because I was a little too young. I was admiring my manager so much, I fell in love with him.

 

René: In 1988, we were in Dublin actually for the Eurovision contest that she won over there in Europe, and that’s when our romance started. You know, I was much older than she was, sure I’m still much older (laughs). So, she wanted to tell the world that we were in love.

 

Celine: I have my dreams, I had my loves as well.

 

René: But at that time, first of all, she had never recorded in English, she was still a very young artist and I was afraid that people would say …

 

Celine: “You know, that manager, you’d better be careful! He’s grown-up man, he’s been married twice, he’s got children”

 

René: I thought it was would ruin her image. You know, a young girl of 20 in love with an old man of 46!

 

Celine: “Not our Celine, in love with her manager, no way! No way! She needs this prince of charm, of her age!” That’s exactly what my mother thought for me. That’s exactly what my mother wanted for me!

 

René: So we kept it secret for like 4 years and funny enough when we revealed it, it started for her to go … to have hits after hits and being a ?household? name. So on the contrary, it didn’t affect her, it helped her career! (laughs)

 

Randy Jackson: I was an Executive at Columbia Records and I remember Tommy Mottola saying “Here’s a new girl from Canada that was unbelievably amazing”.

Tommy Mottola: When I heard Celine’s voice for the first time, it really got my attention. And I heard something very special and unique.

 

René: A very influent producer David Foster believed in her. We had sent him tapes.

 

David Foster: I got this tape, we put it in, and it was like the Maxel ad it’s like when your hair goes back I don’t know how Celine was but you’d have to be an idiot not to know that this was gonna be one of the greatest singers of all time!

Randy Jackson: I got a call from David Foster to come and play bass. So I go in the studio in Malibu and he says wait till you hear this, I mean, this girl’s phenominal she’s incredible, you know, she’s Canadian like me”. David was saying “Man, you gonna love this girl!” He puts it on and I go “Wow! Who is that ?” He said “this is what we’re recording today, this is Celine Dion”. I go “Oh my God !”

Randy Jackson: That was my first introduction, my first album Unison.

 

Coming up next:

René: There was a lot of public interest in our wedding, I was very very surprised!

Celine: I wanted a big fairy tale wedding!

David Foster: It was unbelievable, it was like Lady Di.
