That whole thing sounds so disingenuous and over the top. We get it Mariah, you're trying to convince people that it was Aretha's' night, but it wasn't and everyone remembers Celine from that night.

Exactly!!!

And maybe Celine "involuntarily" moved towards Aretha and started singing. If so, then there's nothing to shade her over. Move on, next!

Beyond the men she zings, Carey reserves some of her most exacting criticism for one of her peers’ performance at the inaugural Divas Live show, which aired April 14, 1998, on VH1. The lineup included Carey, Shania Twain, Gloria Estefan, Celine Dion, and the legend to whom the show paid tribute, Aretha Franklin. Carey recalls the concert’s finale, which featured the entire lineup, as well as special guest Carole King, the writer of the song they all performed together, “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.”

“Everyone knew her part, but we all knew that it was Aretha’s song,” writes Carey. “Well, almost all of us knew.” Carey recalls a fellow diva’s attempt “to come for the Queen a little bit during the song.” While Carey describes the musical one-upping as “fine” she adds, “I wouldn’t have ever done that.”

It seems clear that Carey is referring to Celine Dion, especially since Carole King has discussed the prickly vibe of that “Natural Woman” rendition previously. In a TV interview, King recalled, “The part where Celine was supposed to sing, Aretha was still singing.”

Dion continued to blow her way through the song, which King praised as evidence of “spunk” and “fight.” “I just respected her so much for the classy way that she handled that situation,” said King. (Personally, I always thought of this performance as just divas being divas and getting ostentatious.)

Not so for Carey, though it was what happened next that the singer/songwriter/memoir writer takes the most issue with. The song ended and to close out, Franklin began ad-libbing gospel, operating as a bandleader and calling on her fellow divas to join in. But then:

So the dueling diva had gone too far before (in my humble opinion) and appeared to try and outsing Aretha. That. Happened. I couldn’t believe anyone would try to upstage Aretha Franklin on her tribute, while singing about Jesus, no less. Maybe it was a big culture gap, but it seemed like sheer lunacy to me, and I wanted no part of it. As it was happening, my body began to involuntarily back up out of the Diva lineup and I headed back to join the backup singers, most of whom I knew. It seemed like blasphemy to me, and I wanted to be out of striking distance should the lightning come.

The performance did include a veritable showdown between Franklin and Dion that featured Franklin sing-asking Dion repeatedly, “Do you know Jesus? Do you know the Lord?”

Carey said she was “mortified” at the display. Last year to Extra, Dion recalled her state during the performance: “When you’re next to Aretha, you’re out of your brain. You’re out of your body. You’re out of your soul.” Hence the lunacy, I suppose. Dion also reported that Franklin did not talk to her backstage.

To cap the anecdote, Carey writes of an ensuing conversation with her adopted musical godmother, Patti LaBelle. LaBelle told her, Carey writes: “Mariah, if you would’ve participated in that hoedown, I would’ve had to come slap you in the face.”

Mariah stepped back because she can’t do the highs. You’ll here that her voice were raspy and breaking when doing the highs. So, she’s just being bitter. Tribute? I thought it’s Divas Live?

Anyways, I want Céline’s reaction about this and I’m sure she’ll just laugh about it

Maybe Mariah wants the world to forget that Celine was the first one to be invited and that Celine was at her vocal best that night.

I feel for Mariah.  She clearly has emotional/confidence issues.  I know she also has bipolar.  And not trying to be funny, but I think it affects her emotional response to some things.

Celine and Aretha were fun.  Let's not forget Mariah is trying trying to make the book as juicy as possible.  I mean, Mariah follows Celine on Insta and vice vera.

In short.  Mariah does not have the stage presence, confidence or ability to match Aretha.  Celine did.  Celine would nail Mariah to the wall if she did a one-on-one.

There's a reason Mariah can barely sell-out theatres and Celine arenas and Stadiums.   Hell, Mariah was Lionel Ritches Opening Act "Very Special Guest" just a couple years ago!!  That says it all!!

We should all post on Mariah's instagram "Why don't you open for Celine as Very Special Guest, You know....Just like you did for Lionel." Lol....Petty.  But funny as hell.

Yeah people forget Celine actually recorded the song as well. A few years before Divas ever took place. I really enjoy this performance here, but I wish her voice was in better condition here. I would love to hear her sing it now, and it's actually one of her songs that I think she have gone to #1.

I'm not sure why she's still butt hurt about the Divas Live finale, when it was just between Celine and Aretha. Why does she have to bring up her "issues" with it when she's not even involved in it. Like for crying out loud! LOL

For her part, Celine Dion seems to have fond memories of the concert. When Aretha Franklin died in August 2018, the Quebec star posted a photo of the famous issue on Instagram. "I had the privilege of singing with Aretha ... Certainly one of the great moments of my career", she wrote under the cliché.
In a televised interview with the A&E network in the early 2000s, Carole King referred to this evening by recalling that Aretha had continued to sing during Celine Dion's portion.
“I loved Celine's attitude. She has a dog. She did not let it go and stood up in front of Aretha. I admire the way she handled the situation. With a lot of class. ”
Technically very impressive, this "vocal battle" continues to delight Internet users - 22 years later - since a few extracts are still circulating on YouTube.

It's basically saying those two songs would fit in a Celine album... But given that it started the sentence with "while [Mariah's] lyricism has improved dramatically over time," the article is implying and throwing shade at Celine's songs' lyricism not having "improved" over time...
