Patti played IYAMT as her second song and started with “Celine did this song after me, I did it first” and the crowd thought it was kind of funny shade.

Beyond the men she zings, Carey reserves some of her most exacting criticism for one of her peers’ performance at the inaugural Divas Live show, which aired April 14, 1998, on VH1. The lineup included Carey, Shania Twain, Gloria Estefan, Celine Dion, and the legend to whom the show paid tribute, Aretha Franklin. Carey recalls the concert’s finale, which featured the entire lineup, as well as special guest Carole King, the writer of the song they all performed together, “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.”
“Everyone knew her part, but we all knew that it was Aretha’s song,” writes Carey. “Well, almost all of us knew.” Carey recalls a fellow diva’s attempt “to come for the Queen a little bit during the song.” While Carey describes the musical one-upping as “fine” she adds, “I wouldn’t have ever done that.”
It seems clear that Carey is referring to Celine Dion, especially since Carole King has discussed the prickly vibe of that “Natural Woman” rendition previously. In a TV interview, King recalled, “The part where Celine was supposed to sing, Aretha was still singing.”
Dion continued to blow her way through the song, which King praised as evidence of “spunk” and “fight.” “I just respected her so much for the classy way that she handled that situation,” said King. (Personally, I always thought of this performance as just divas being divas and getting ostentatious.)
Not so for Carey, though it was what happened next that the singer/songwriter/memoir writer takes the most issue with. The song ended and to close out, Franklin began ad-libbing gospel, operating as a bandleader and calling on her fellow divas to join in. But then:
So the dueling diva had gone too far before (in my humble opinion) and appeared to try and outsing Aretha. That. Happened. I couldn’t believe anyone would try to upstage Aretha Franklin on her tribute, while singing about Jesus, no less. Maybe it was a big culture gap, but it seemed like sheer lunacy to me, and I wanted no part of it. As it was happening, my body began to involuntarily back up out of the Diva lineup and I headed back to join the backup singers, most of whom I knew. It seemed like blasphemy to me, and I wanted to be out of striking distance should the lightning come.
The performance did include a veritable showdown between Franklin and Dion that featured Franklin sing-asking Dion repeatedly, “Do you know Jesus? Do you know the Lord?”
Carey said she was “mortified” at the display. Last year to Extra, Dion recalled her state during the performance: “When you’re next to Aretha, you’re out of your brain. You’re out of your body. You’re out of your soul.” Hence the lunacy, I suppose. Dion also reported that Franklin did not talk to her backstage.
To cap the anecdote, Carey writes of an ensuing conversation with her adopted musical godmother, Patti LaBelle. LaBelle told her, Carey writes: “Mariah, if you would’ve participated in that hoedown, I would’ve had to come slap you in the face.”

I’m not old enough to know how long Aretha had such a bloated ego, but she certainly didn’t own the show nor did she own any other of the performers (except her backup singers, who were on her payroll). Say what you want about their vocal ability, but each of them earned their spot on that stage. She intentionally degraded those women and treated them like they were on par with her backup singers. NOT COOL.
To say “Céline shouldn’t have done that ...because Aretha was the Queen” is idiotic. She is not an actual queen, so any amount of respect paid is entirely up to each diva to decide for herself, and is certainly not owed. Yes, she opened doors for non-whites and female singers, but that doesn’t give anyone the right to highjack a concert/fundraiser for their own selfish need for adoration and praise.
If Céline “overstepped”, it’s only because she didn’t understand the distorted rules that Aretha and Mariah came up with and expected everyone else to follow without being told. Maybe that’s the “culture gap” Mariah speaks of...

You pretty much said it all. Also did you know that Vh1 was originally going to give the show only to Celine? She was the entire reason it all ever happened in the first place! Then it was going to be just Aretha-Celine-Mariah, and then they opened it up even further!

Also this thing that this concert was a tribute to Aretha is complete BS. Like Chantemoi said, it was a It was a fundraiser for inner-city schools’ music departments. If anything, it was more about Celine than the other divas at first since she was the first one who agreed to do it. Then eventually it turned into the "Divas" when after the others joined.
Mariah really is so petty when it comes to this subject, just like the lambs defending her. Luckily, there is proof, and everyone can look it up for themselves.

The thing is, I can give it to her that Celine's body language was very flamboyant..and maybe over-the-top...but that's Celine! And I could even see if it were a riff-out....but even then, it was done in a friendly competitive way---which Aretha literally invited.
You're right...it's a hill that Mariah wants to die on. I mean, it makes for good entertainment for the book, but otherwise it's total BS. Why wouldn't she spend more of those pages talking about her relationship with Aretha, or the positive things she enjoyed about that night, or how she felt about the collaboration...but instead she chose to focus on Celine.

I think Mariah's reason for this stupid lie boils down to two things. Celine vocals were way better that night and Celine got all the attention for it after the show. Two things Mariah just can't handle. Which honestly is pretty sad. So then she had to try and save her dignity somehow. Even if it's the most blatant lie she can come up with.
Mariah doesn't have any stage confidence, but Celine do. Celine always did, and if you look at their careers, Celine is the only one still selling out tours and residencies. Meanwhile, Mariah has been a judge on American Idol with snarky behavior, and tried to stay relevant by doing a reality show about her life that was quickly cancelled. Celine doesn't need to to stuff like this because she's busy being a singer. Occasionally Mariah does some mini tours and mini residencies, but it's not exactly sold out events. She's the Christmas lady now, and that's pretty much it. Also, remember New Years 2016/17? ...and how she blamed it on the production company? Mariah is incapable of taking responsibility for anything, and it's been countless of examples of this.
But right now she need to sell this book, and I get that it needs to be juicy for people to be interested in buying it, but she's gonna need luck if she wants to sell anything legitimately. We all know whatever scandal or drama she's been involved in, it's never her fault, and everyone else was wrong. It's the same story over and over again.

I read the whole thing about Celine/Divas, but it's even worse hearing Mariah read it. Her reading isn't remotely convincing. That part when she said "As it was happening, my body began to involuntarily back up out of the diva lineup and I headed to join the backup singers" is so stupid it's hard to put into words. "involuntarily", really? She knew her limits that night, but needs an excuse to blame Celine, or anyone else for it.
"I was mortified, but of course Aretha didn't care, she had more skill, soul and natural talent than all of us combined and then multiplied". Mariah is working overtime with these obviously excessive compliments only to smear Celine because she hurt her ego. We know that Mariah doesn't really think Aretha is better than all of them combined and THEN multiplied. That's absurd and even though Mariah respects Aretha, Mariah loves Mariah more. Clearly. That whole thing sounds so disingenuous and over the top. We get it Mariah, you're trying to convince people that it was Aretha's' night, but it wasn't and everyone remembers Celine from that night.

Well Celine did reply to the "controversy" nicely. Btw, I love her expression when he so stupidly asks that question. (1:10 ish mark)
