I have to say, all these videos are beautiful and the atmosphere was amazing that night. I am not sure what I would do if I stood so close to the stage. I would be mesmerized too, for sure. Oh and last but sure not least - doesn't she look ah-maaaaaaaaaaaaaa-zing!

Watching Celine Dion play to a crowd one-twentieth of the size she sells out some 100 nights a year in Las Vegas Tuesday night was not unlike watching LeBron James nail an hour's worth of slam dunks during a private session.

Dion performed an intimate concert for Pandora Presents at Manhattan's Edison Ballroom, attended mostly by Pandora listeners from the New York Tri-State area who've created a Celine Dion station or thumbed-up one of her songs. The invite-only audience was a noticeable fraction of the venue's 1,200-person capacity, making it the smallest U.S. concert Dion has performed in decades, if not ever. The gig was in support of new album "Loved Me Back To Life" (out Nov. 5), but it was really a chance to showcase many of her biggest hits to a room full of hardcore fans who would never otherwise be within an un-zoomed Instagram's distance from the diva.

Dion opened with a one-two punch of "It's All Coming Back To Me Now/The Power Of Love" medley, immediately followed by other hits like the rarely performed "Where Does My Heart Beat Now" and the venerable "Because You Loved Me," during which Dion invited the crowd to join her on the last chorus. She unpacked a few of her Vegas theatrics later on for show staples like "River Deep, Mountain High" and her hit cover of Eric Carmen's "All By Myself," attacking each high note with an athletic precision. She Catholic-crossed herself with a fist at one point after nailing a particularly epic melodic lift, and pounded on an invisible drum kit for another, making liberal use of the diva finger wave for every melismatic phrase.



Mid-way through the set, Dion thanked the crowd for supporting her over the years and being patient for "Loved Me Back To Life," her first English-language album in six years, prompting one fan to shout "That's too long!" Dion politely retorted, in her welcoming French-Canadian inflection, "Well I had two babies and a French album and a Vegas show – I've been busy!"

Dion played three selections from the album, including first single "Loved Me Back To Life," whose Sia-penned vocal and lyrics were already a favorite among the crowd. Fans swayed their hands up and down during the dramatic chorus, a movement more common at a Skrillex show than something you'd expect from Celine Dion. Next was her rendition of "Water And A Flame," a duet originally recorded by Daniel Merriweather and Adele that Dion impressively turns into her own gin-soaked breakup ballad. A cover of Janis Ian's "At Seventeen" was slightly less well-received, accompanied by a high volume of crowd chatter more akin to an indie-rock opener at Webster Hall.



Luckily, Dion knew how to earn the crowd's attention, revisiting 1997's ridiculously pedigreed power ballad "The Reason" (written by Carole King, produced by George Martin) to surprisingly rapturous response. Many fans sung along to every word of the opener to "Let's Talk About Love," Dion's second best-selling album, despite its never being released as an official single or performed during her Vegas show.

But she saved her most enthralling moment for the very end, encoring with the anticipated "My Heart Will Go On." It's a song that Dion has performed thousands of times on world tours and a decade of shows at the Colosseum in Caesars Palace, an historic run that has grossed nearly a half-billion dollars in ticket sales since March 2003. But Dion made the Pandora performance unique with a flourish that could only be appreciated from the hushed volume of a small club. By re-creating the "Titanic" theme's iconic flute introduction using just her voice, Dion brought a pin-drop silence to a room that had been buzzing just seconds prior. For a song that's been so inescapable for some 16 years, Dion could still bring new layers of depth and emotion – no chest-thumping required.

I have to admit, after so many years of feeling like the only proponent of Celine, it's gratifying to see that the mainstream press (including my former Billboard) at last GETS celine... my only question... WTF took so long?! !? !?

I agree!!!!!!! I hate with all my heart that you no longer write for them, Chuck!!! I wish I had every single article that you wrote on her, because you always shed her in a good light. And you spoke the truth about her. You didn't come off as a fan, you came off as her friend, which is what was the key element and what was so important to me about the way you wrote your articles. It was as if you were supporting a friend, rather than promoting your favorite artist. You're a rare breed, Chuck Taylor. We need more of you in this world.

OMG Absolutely! I remember reading Chuck's Airwaves (I think that was the name of the column) and in 95 I had no idea TLYM existed, so when I read it I became sooo excited. The columns were always on point and I also loved Billboard Radio Countdown ("No one sings it like Celine Dion")! (Not to mention that I used one of his articles to write my thesis).

It seemed to me, as you say that he was a friend or a family member!

It seems Celine is FINALLY earning the respect she's deserved all these years.  The concert videos make the atmosphere look amazing.

Even if this album bombs, she's respected, she's talented and we love her!

What an amazing evening! It still haven't fully sunk in yet. I recorded every song on my phone. Wish more of you could be with us.

MHWGO and the rest of the songs seems LIVE to me! Why would she not on a show like this with execs, press, and bloggers?

A couple of tidbits:
All those VIPs got to meet Celine and take a photo after the show. They also got a copy of the album
They had a pile of 20x16 promo posters for everyone to take at the end of the show. She signed mine when she came out.

I am torn. I mean, Celine is still doing amazing things and NEW things at this stage in her career which is very pleasing to fans. At the same time, I keep feeling she isn't taking full advantage of these ventures. The Edison show could have showcased the album, she could have redone arrangements for a few old songs and done some more acoustic stuff.

At the very least, we could have had professional cameras there.

I feel like I am watching the same Celine movie over and over, but the plot is maybe 5% different every time. I mean, about the only take-away I will have from the concert is her intro to MHWGO and maybe the bridge from WAAF.

OMG her voice! I'm so please to tell the haters wrong! So many people rushed to the social networks to claim that her voice was over after the performances of LMBTL on Ellen and Jimmy Kimmel but here... The reason's never sounded so powerful since she started her new Vegas show and Water and a Flame... Just as good -maybe better- than the studio version. Her voice was so flexible and deep that night. What frustrated me is that we could tell that All by myself note was lipped, but her performance of the rest of the song reminded me a lot of the FIY tour area. The highs were so clear and strong and nothing was out of tone. No doubt she didn't hit the note just to save her voice and not because she's not capable of doing it anymo(oOOOo)re (pun not intended lol). I personaly think MHWGO was live too and that intro was epic. Billboard depicted it just right. It's crazy how she hypnotised the crowd with that humming. Totally captures the atmosphere of the movie. Grand! Anyway, that showcase was a total success. Can't wait for her shows in France!

Has anyone thought of the fact that it takes a lot of time to rehearse new songs with the band? Time she doesn't have because she is promoting the album in all kinds of shows! I'm bummed as well we didn't get more new songs but just adding a few new songs to the setlist isn't as simple as many of you might think. And because the audience consisted mainly out of press, I think it was a good move to do some oldies (to impress them and give them the nostalgia-feeling) and then some new songs (to make them think 'wow she is doing new and cool stuff which is amazing as well'.) When you look at the reviews I think this is exactly what happened.
