Donna Summer has died at the age of 63.

The disco superstar passed away after a battle with lung cancer, according to reports.

"Early this morning, we lost Donna Summer Sudano, a woman of many gifts, the greatest being her faith," her family said in a statement.

"While we grieve her passing, we are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy.

"Words truly can't express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time."

A multi-award winning artist famed for her work with producer Giorgio Moroder, Summer was best known for her disco hits 'I Feel Love', 'Hot Stuff', 'Last Dance' and 'Bad Girls'.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts on New Year's Eve in 1948, Summer was one of seven children.

She received five Grammy awards, the first in 1979 for 'Best R&B Vocal Performance (Female)' for 'Last Dance', and the last in 1998 for 'Best Dance Recording' for 'Carry On'.

Summer had a Top 40 hit in the Billboard Hot 100 every single year from 1976 to 1984.

So sad to hear of Donnas passing, she was a fantastic singer who could belt with the best of them and she did, Enough is Enough with Barbra!
She had such a powerful strong voice yet her ballads were just as good as her disco hits......sing with the angels Donna R.I.P.

she had such a strong voice. she sounded like a teenager when she was in her 60s!

Donna's passing has hit me hard. Totally unexpected and such a big loss. She was one of my idols.

She changed the music in so many ways and influenced so many artists that I believe she was so much more than just the Queen of Disco. That title made her a very underrated singer but she really is legendary. If I had to pick 5 of my favorite female singers, she would be one of them.

May she rest in peace.

PS. Here's one of her latest performances (from 2010, just 2 years ago). Her voice was AMAZING until the very end.

When I saw this one Thursday I too was completely shocked and still can't believe she is dead. I liked a few of her songs but wasn't too into her. She will be missed.

Still cant believe Donna is gone....am playing through some of her cd's and was thinking it would be great to hear Celine sing some of them..especcially McArthur Park it is such an epic song only Celine could now do it justice.
It would be a nice nod of acknowledgement to Donna and her fans.

Seeing as this RIP topic is the only one we have discussing Donna Summer, I thought I'd ask if anyone has bought the new 'Love To Love You Donna' remix album?  I've been following the build-up to this CD on the official Facebook page, and enjoyed some of the previews, but found some of the new remixes awful. Now that I have the album, I find that some of them I have to skip completely because they are so boring and repetitive, and don't respect the original version at all. :unsure:

I've cancelled my order for the vinyl, as I know the only thing I would like about it is the big cover, but the rest is not worth paying £18 for. Apart from Love To Love You Baby and Love Is In Control (Finger On The Trigger), the remixes are pretty bad.

I hope Donna's husband focuses more on releasing unreleased material in the future rather than remixing her hits. There are so many things she has recorded over the years that have never seen the light of day. I believe she even recorded an album with Sony after she signed with them in 1999, it would be great to hear that.

Also, while we are on the topic, Donna Summer and Celine are 2 of the only 3 females Barbra Streisand did a recorded duet with in the first 50+ years of her career.
