I loved what she said! And I think she is one of the best people to comment on Michael, because she's one of the few who would truly understand the pressure he was under since childhood. Most people forget that she was a child star too. We are so lucky she has such a strong support system, who takes care of her and keeps her grounded.

Well said. :thumbsup2:   It was short but I really liked what she said too.
Of course she can understand how it is.  Céline was lucky to have a strong foundation from her family early on in life though.  Also, it was very important for René and she to always be surrounded by good and loyal people and to grow together, qualified to do the job of course but people they could also trust and who shared the same values in a way.  All of that surely help her and continues to be crucial today for her to remain this very healthy woman(physically and emotionally).  She's a very sensitive woman but also very confident and strong. Years passing and experience seems to bring her a lot of wisedom.

Thanks for this Ladylinsey, how thoughtfull of you to share this with everyone.

Edit :  I especially liked what she said about not wanting to be surrounded with people who would say "yes" to her but people whom she trusted could protect her and love her for the "person she is for them"(not the singer) but the friend she is, the wife, the sister.....

Oh! and it's been years since I've seen Greta and I think she looked younger ;)

I think you can watch her part here: go to this site and halfway down the page on the right hand side is a Fox News Video box. One of the options is Celine Dion Remembers Michael Jackson. Click on that and it should pop up a video player of her phone interview :)

Thanks for posting, everyone. Wow, I never realized Celine liked him so much! I know she's a caring woman and she likes his music, I just never thought she cared this much. Same thing with the whole world, though. Where were all these fans and supporters when he was alive?

Good question. I'm wondering the same thing. I guess, all of the controversies and the strangeness surrounding him just overshadowed who he was in the beginning. And let’s be honest here, he didn’t look now anything like he did in the Thriller video. It was hard to even relate the two images together. Now that his music has been playing literally everywhere, I realize how many of his songs I loved to dance to growing up. Not to mention, realizing that he basically invented the music video. And where would I be without music videos? :o  :msn-wink:

I'm still trying to figure out why she only talked about herself during the whole monologue she gave in answer to one question. Why did she not reminisce about the couple times she met Michael Jackson? I think this "interview" made her look bad just like the Larry King interview with the kayak during Hurricane Katrina. At least she didn't talk all about herself then.

The whole point of the segment was to talk about her memories of Michael and offer a bit of insight about the pressures of show business. Look at the transcript of her response. It goes on and on.

Greta's Question: Celine, no one knows better, I think, then you how tough it is to do 50 concerts. You did more than 700, maybe 750 in Vegas. Can you give us some idea of the physical stamina, because there's a lot of thought about, you know, how hard it was physically for Michael Jackson?

Celine's Response: Rambling. I agree with what she said, but it was all over the place. She only talked about meeting Michael once. We all know she met him more than that!

Anyway, I'm confused by her not talking specifically about Michael. She didn't need to speculate about his life, but just talk about her times meeting him. What was her impression? Why did she like his music?

I hope I haven't ruffled any feathers here. I adore Celine just like the rest of you. I'm just disappointed that she neglected to discuss the real reason Greta put her on her show: Memories of Michael Jackson.

Yeah she did completely avoid talking about the stress of performing so many shows, I'm not sure why as this would have been easier for her to answer than the topics she ended up talking about. I think possibly because she wanted to first acknowledge that she was a fan and she met him before she got into that question and then ended up getting side tracked and talking about something else.

I also think that by addressing her own life she was showing that his path could have been very different, even though this wasn't specifically asked to her as a question. They were in similar situations when they were kids, they both found success early on and they both had life changing fame thrown on them, but from that point onwards they went in completely different directions. No one was able to keep Michael's feet firmly planted on the ground, the pressure of showbusiness and his fame changed him and his life spiraled out of control. Celine wasn't changed like this by her success so I think she was actually talking about the lack of stability in his life without actually saying it directly.

I hope that people watching it don't think she was saying "I had balance, I had family, I had stability and I turned out great and he didn't have any of this so that's why he was bizarre" because I don't think she meant it like this.

I understand what you are saying, but I think Celine wanted to share with people what it is really like in their world and maybe give people an insight as to why Michael Jackson was like he was.
It is extremely relevant Celine talking about herself as she knew a bit of MJ, but onbiously can't, and shouldn't comment on his personal situations, which is why I think she turned the spotlight to herself.

I think what Celine said was just right, I knew that being as big of a star as Celine and Michael would obviously be stressful, but not as stressful as Celine made out! I'm glad she is so grounded and very much loved by her family/friends and especially us, her fans!

I thought she had trouble finding her words, but I thought it was a great interview, be it only one question asked. :) And yes, she rambled, but it's Céline!! :P

I think the whole point of her interview had nothing to do with talking about meeting him, etc. - she already said all of that in her statement as well as on LKL anyways. She was there to offer insight into the kind of pressure Michael must have been feeling embarking on a tour, and I think she understands that more than anyone. She was talking about herself to try to convey what she had in her life and career, and what Michael maybe didn’t. She was explaining what she did in order to be able to do 700+ shows in Vegas, and how she handled the pressure. She stated that she has a very strong support system, that's how she's done it all these years. Maybe she shouldn’t have speculated that Michael didn’t have that… but I think we can all assume that he must not have.

I think she's overwhelmed for one because he was her idol, and also because she's so thankful that she is where she is now, with the loving people she has around her, taking care of her when she needs it, even when she'd rather refuse it. Because for him, it seems, it was not the case. All in all, I think she was trying to explain why this happened to him. And that question may go unanswered forever... Now I'm rambling, lol. ;)

Thank you the replies! I agree with you all. Celine gave great insight on how important it is to have a strong support system and hinted that this may have been what Michael was lacking. I imagine she is feeling very fortunate that the people she has chosen to surround herself with have her best interests at heart.

Perhaps the thing to do with Celine if you know you are interviewing her is to ask 50 questions at once and let her answer them all in one go. LOL!

I agree with what many of you have said. Her main point is the importance of having balance in the form of family and friends who are there to support her and not just ride her coat tail. Knowing that Celine is a talker, interviewers would do well to provide her a list of questions ahead of time so she can prepare her answers. I would imagine, in the midst of grief and her tendency to "talk", it is even more difficult for her to find her words, especially in English. Does the same thing happen when she speaks in French?

hmm well I kinda agree with you, Meghan, that she talked a lot about herself, but I think that she was trying to make an example of why it has gone wrong with michael... also you are right; its about remembering MJ, but if Céline really went too much off topic, then the interviewer should have asked more! also, it's not like Céline was such a close friend... I think she already said it all with Larry King...

but btw, this is typically Céline; she starts rambeling and gives tons of 'information', but ends up talking about something completly different! :mdr:

No she not exactly that way in French.  Of course it's a lot easier for her in French when she's talking about emotional or more personal things.  I can understand her very much on this one.  But at the same time I'd rather she'd be like this(in english) then to sound like she's all prepared and lack that natural Céline I know just being herself.  I would guess people know by now that it's not her first language.

Also I liked a lot of what many of you have said previously.  Très pertinent!

I saw it and i wasn't very impressed with Celine, i mean she didn't answer the only question Greta asked. I like that they showed in the background Celine singing Bad dressed as Michael, they really prepared for the interview.

Well, Celine began answering the question Greta asked, but then began to broaden the discussion. She went all over the place, which I loved. She talked alot (she ususally does), and that just shows how passionate she was towards Michael as a perfomer and a person. I hate Greta and Fox News as a whole, because they give pseudo-news coated with a pro-Republican agenda, but I wanted to see Celine, so I bit my tongue and enjoyed her lol!

yeah I really didn't get the impression she was such a close friend of Michael's. Seems like they met a couple times, talked and that was really it.

I loved hearing her again. It's a pity it's for such a sad occasion though... I think she basically answered the reporter's question, about how it is to feel that stress, considering she's one of the few people that do know that. I like that she emphasized the stress thing. The truth is that no matter how good a performer you are and how well you feel on stage, there's a tremendous amount of stress associated with having a few thousand people's eyes staring at you. It's a psychology thing, I don't really know how to describe it, but even if the person doesn't realise she/he is being stressed by all those people looking at her/him, the stress is there, subconsciously.
Obsviously, she figured she would be asked about Michael and she thought of an answer before (or her publicist did), so she's telling the same things. Her interview on LCN, in French, was the best, because the reporter did not let her go about her speech, he asked her good questions. So if it's anybody's fault that she talked so long, it's the reporter's; she had no idea what to ask and what direction to give to this interview. She was just happy Celine's a talker and filled up all the air time she needed filled.

Celine was marvelous at describing her world and the importance of having family life to ground the superstar into reality.  I love Celine !  She is so sincere.

Did anybody else notice that Celine often uses the word amazing when she want to say big/huge? Or is just me?

I have to agree, Celine was all over the place but I feel that she did answer the reporter's question and got her point across well. What's more, she was sincere and what she said came from her heart...

Celine has to learn to cut her answers down and take a breath between sentences. I like what she said but she needs to let the interviewer get a few words in.

I noticed she started to do this during the Falling Into You era. She would get one question and then talk forever to avoid any other personal questions. But sometimes that comes across as being a little "foolish". That rambling was pretty bad as far as I'm concerned. And no, she isn't that way in French, thank God!!! And I'm a fan! Imagine people who don't really like her and hear this interview...

She'd be better not to do any interview rather than something like this... Not good for her image I believe.

^ I agree and I think this interview has probably done more harm than good.
