It all leads up to The Song.
All of the sequin costumes and the sexy choreography. All of the lesser hits. All of the love, love, love that Celine Dion throws out: to her friends Pierre and Coco who came to the show, to her guests from the local hospital who treated her brother after an accident, to entertainment mogul Phil Anschutz who bankrolled her smash Vegas show and sits in a center stage skybox counting his cash.
It is all just a prequel to the number fans have come to hear.
The lights go dark. The melancholy strains of a high-pitched woodwind waft into the air. Leonardo and Kate appear on the giant video cube, big as an ocean liner, that has been swirling all night above the stage. The crowd goes crazy and Celine rips yet again into "My Heart Will Go On" as if she will never get the chance to sing it again.
It is the "merci" moment of Celine Dion's "Taking Chances" world tour, which filled most of the Pepsi Center Tuesday night. Dion gives it to her fans as big thank you for staying with her wonderful, schmaltzy act throughout an age that's supposed to be far to too cynical for it. She rises to the occasion (literally rises from under that stage) and uses it to cap a performance that indulges her showy, show biz ways and the room's absolute love of every note she sings, every story she tells about her kids and her mom and her career, every exaggerated facial expression and, yes, every fist pound to her heart.
There was little Celine could do to displease her fans Tuesday. Not even leaving them waiting for a concert that went on sale in November 2007 for a show originally scheduled for November 2008 and postponed until February 2009.
She apologized for that upfront. "I never want to let you down," she swore to the audience, noting how much effort it takes to get ready to come see her. Then she made amends by singing hits: "Because You Loved Me," "All Coming Back to Me Now, "Taking Chances," "All By Myself."
Celine sounded great, unfailingly, and just as expected. And she looked great, too, sexy in a sparkly lilac mini, a sparkly white mini, a sparkly tangerine mini, and a pair of sparkly stretch bell bottoms that clung tight front and back.
There were, of course, few chances taken on this "Taking Chances" tour - unless you count managing six outfits and singing on a moving conveyor belt risky. Or realize how daring it is for a French Canadian mom to produce covers, adequately, of James Brown's "I Got You" or Tina Turner's "River Deep, Mountain High."
It was all just the opposite of venturous, thank goodness. Dion is not about moving music forward, she is about keeping the same, indulging a certain kind of flamboyance that honors big ballads and winks to the audience. If there is any risk, it involves pushing the limits of just how "Vegas" she can go, just how many crescendos of sincerity she can cram into one two-hour tour stop.
In that regard, this is an art form, perfectly obliged, that seems to have no limits.

Yeah as people mentioned Celine said their "Best Friends" were there and there was a group of doctors/nurses/other hospital workers there that she gave a shout out to for being amazing and helping her nephew Jimmy back when he had an accident. She also was happy to be back again since she opened the Pepsi Center ten years ago! The bad part was the crowd was pretty lame on my side anyways, at the end of most songs only a few people would stand and clap and if I stood and clapped and yelled the people in front of me would give me weird looks. Uh sorry for being excited? Oh & I had almost the whole row to myself, and that was NICE. Celine of course was AMAZING and her vocals were so super, I didn't notice any major changes to anything. Oh and for the dress being wet, I guess she had sweated but it made it look like she had an accident LOL Her banter was of course funny most of it the usual, tour school, taking her kayak to see her mom, saying how much she loves ducks, don't forget the water. She did get a stuffed rose though and she made sure to point out that it was to NOT go in water. One of the best parts was at the, I think, beginning of My Love someone was whistling really loud and funny and Celine made the funniest like WTF
