Céline's Singing Rivalwho is Célines main rival

who in your mind is Céline's main rival in terms of singing ability and music status... i'm sure for most of you she is above everyone else, but just for fun, who is her match, or just below her, or even above her.
for me i'd say Whitney Houston. the two seem very simular in the respect that they are fantastic female ballad singers and have strong strong STRONG voices! the style of their music is quite simular too. the main difference between whitney and celine seems to be the strength of their singing pitch, whilst céline i feel is suited to lower poweful tones whitney gives a good high note. i feel céline's higher notes are a bit too shaky such as the end of MHWGO.
other contenders:
mariah carey - i wouldnt conisder her to be like celine as her style of music has gone very ghetto and she conquers most of her songs with high (and i do mean HIGH) notes. though alot of her older work is more ballad-like and her voice is almost as powerful.
shirley bassey - i hate to say it but this woman i feel has an even more powerful voice than our celine. whilst mariah has dominated the whistle pitch, shirley bassey has truly dominated sheer power.

Je deviendrai ces autres qui te donnent du plaisir
Vos jeux seront les notres si tel est ton desir
Plus brillante plus belle pour une autre étincelle
Je me changerai en or pour que tu m' aimes encore

Really, Each time I am listening to someone else for a long time, I just got to hear Celine's voice after it for relaxing me because for me NO-ONE ever is in Celine's class.

Sorry for my English.

always preferred Celine.
But since Whitney isn't curently active, I would say
that no one can compete with Celine at the moment.
And honestly, I never thought Mariah could reach Celine!

In terms of raw power I don't think she will ever be matched, her voice truely is a gift!

Even though Mariah, Whitney, and Celine have always been compared, the mid 1990s was the era when their "competition" was at full force. In spite of being "singing rivals", they all held their own ground and had their specific fan base. So I guess we can say that "competition" more or less did not exist per se. Though they are all vocal powerhouses, they are all very different.
Whether Mariah lost her voice or not, her most recent albums and performances show she can still hit some notes, but her vocal stamina she always showed the world sometimes appears to not be present.
Let us all remember that in the mid 1990s during the Falling Into You and Let's Talk About Love eras, Celine did not lower her key or pitch when she sang live. Celine started lowering her key when singing live during her residency in Las Vegas. Even though Celine has lowered her key in certain songs such as TPOL, TLYM, BYLM, and IACBTMN, she still sounds great. You can also still appreciate the high notes in the songs. On the other hand, Celine did not lower her key when singing RDMH in Las Vegas.
Nonetheless, I have watched some of Whitney's live performances on YouTube and what not. Though Whitney is very talented vocally, she often lowers her key when singing live. As such, her live songs sound very different than they do recorded. It seems to me that when Whitney lowers her key when singing live, some of the songs lose their substance. However, when Celine does lower her key, the songs still seem to retain their resonance.

Celine and Mariah are still doing well in the music industry until now. They've sold hundreds of millions of albums.
Whitney was just compared to them 'cos there wasn't really anybody on Whitney's time who was as popular as her and her voice is also far better than the others. Whitney didn't have a rival on her time. It was unfortunate that Whitney engaged to things that affected her voice and popularity that when she released here albums in the 90's, it didn't do well as better as when she started.
Alicia Key's rival is Beyonce. and not Celine.
Britney's rival shouldn't really be Christina cos Britney's voice is nothing compared to Christina's voice. Christina's dancing is also nothing compared to Britney's dancing skills.
It should be Christina and Kelly Clarkson. I would suggest Christina to stick on pop ballads so more people will buy her albums. Just like what happened to kelly. Because of the song "Because of You", a lot of people buy her album.

I would say that Kelly Clarkson is no competition for Christina Aguilera. Even though Kelly Clarkson can sing well, I just don't think Christina would need to worry about Kelly.
Besides, did Christina not co-write Miss Independent, one of Kelly's singles from her debut album?

Totally agreed! Besides, I never really thought Whitney's voice was THAT special... I mean, don't get me wrong, I DO think she is one of the greatest singers of all-time (Celine being THE best, hahaha!), but her voice just didn't have that super special, unique sound like Celine's voice does... and well, it's obvious she has lost her voice now... and don't even get me started on Mariah, that girl used to have a very special talent and she just lost it all together, she can't seem to be able to sing live anymore, all she does is shout, not sing... and... she's a b**ch... always has been and always will be...

She co-wrote the song and it was going to be on her "Stripped" Album, but it did not make the final cut, so the co-writer/producer finished up the song and let Clarkson use it on her album. Christina did not intentionally co-write the song for Clarkson. But I agree... not really rivals, are they?

Yes, that is true... Christina was considering Miss Independent for her second album, albeit the song was not complete. However, if I am not mistaken, Christina found Fighter and chose that song instead.
Though Christina did not co-write it "intentionally", her name is still on the song credits as a writer and was eventually given to Kelly.
Reminds me how Carole King wrote The Reason and it was intended to be given to Aerosmith. But Celine wound up with the song!
I am trying to analyze this, but I am just not finding a point of comparison between Christina and Kelly! LOL!

if by singing rival you mean just in terms of overall status and career as female singers - then of course it would be the "holy trinity" of divas - LOL celine, mariah and whitney. although madonna's sales seem to be the only threat to celine's status as world's best selling solo female artist of all time- I could care less about madonna - because as much as I do love many madonna songs (and admit she is a great entertainer), too much of her success has been due to (imo) image, luck and controversy and less because of actual talent.
(though i'm sure madonna fans would slaughter me by claiming she is brilliant and innovative with her songwriting, dancing, innovation, reinvention of self, etc. BLAH)
however if you mean singing rival in terms of CONTINUED present vocal prowess, then mariah and whitney are both diminished by far. recent celine lipsynching controversies and the maturation of her voice have prompted some celine fans to think she's lost part of her power before too, but I think overall her voice is still pretty much just as powerful and she's definitely preserved more of her voice by far than whitney or mariah.
so in terms of singing rivals right now (and not success) then it would have to be someone like christina aguilera I suppose, although I recently began to realize what people were talking about when they always criticized christina for growling from her throat in order to hit a note rather than hitting it directly (and also her method of always playing around the note with melismas and runs because perhaps she can't just hit it in a straight and solid manner and hold it like celine does). in a way her growling adds grit and a special quality to her singing but as people have said in the long run this method of singing will only diminish her voice more quickly.

And off course, since I am a huge Josh Groban's fan, I always say that he is to me the male version of Celine, not only because of his huge voice, but also because he's so simple and down to earth.
So, to sum it up, my choices are
LAURA PAUSINI
JOSH GROBAN
I really don't like Mariah's style and voice anymore, and Withney (I'm sorry) can't (and never could) deliver a decent note when she is live.

it's more than just enough.
When all that you need to love
is in front of your eyes,
is in front of your eyes "
Thanks a lot Peggi...you're awesome

I think Lara is a wonderful singer. Her vocal range and abilities are magnificent. I have always heard people say that Lara tries to sound like Celine. Lara and Celine have always been compared in the past. However, I have never thought Lara or Celine are alike or that Lara has tried to follow in Celine's footsteps. To me, they seem like two very different artists. Aside from the fact that they are both extremely popular in Quebec and France and one of their mutual musical influences is Barbra Streisand, they are two very different singers. Again, I see no major points of similarity or comparison.
