and not to think of:
- vegas throat again
- bad promotion (well even worse promotion :P )
- a very 'american' show
- 90% of the same setlist
- no accessability at all
do I need to continue?? :whistling:

What was wrong with Vegas?  I just don't get it that some people are against  her return to Vegas...

Something like "A New Day in Vegas" was never done before...  5 years, 723 show, 4.000 people in each show... (or near 3 million visitors)  Sold out day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year...
Nobody had done it and noboday have tried it since then...

If Vegas was such a bad thing, I serious doubt that about 3 million visitors (not people, since several have gone multiple times) could be reached with a show that was that bad as some like to see...  And yes, the same setlest did we see over and over again, but this was also the case during the last worldtour and even through the previous worldtour...  She has several worldhits that will return to every single show she will be making, if the show is in Vegas or in Shangai it won't be different...  Pour que tu m'aimes encore is a song that returns over and over again, All by myself, The power of love, My heart will go on, etc... Numerous songs that will continue to make it into the setlists of every show she will be making...

So what's the difference between Vegas and a worldtour?  Not a single thing in means of a show...  Both will continue to have similar songs with new songs in addition to famous worldhits and this wil be so till the day she retires.

But...  With perfoming in Vegas she can live in her own house on her own rythm and be a normal women again...  Stop packing bags, flying across the world, sleeping in strange beds over and over again, stop adapting to other atmosphere and risking to be sick again...  Stop draging her son arround, stop crossing accros the globe with a beloved husband who is aging year after year and for who it also become harder and harder (Réne is not the youngest anymore you know)...  Being a normal family and having a "normal" job for some years...  I definately would prefer it above touring arround...  And I guess she, Rene and Rene-Charles would prefer it also...  Think about it for a second...  It's not only about her anymore, she has a loving husband and a loving son and if everything goes fine maybe another kid also...  Wouldn't it be better for them to settle?  Giving RC the chance to make friends in one place?  To give Céline the change to become a regular mother with a "regular" job?  And even when she's living in Las Vegas she can still easily fly to Montréal, Florida or France to live in one of their other homes...  They will finally get a "real" life...

But...  It won't be good alone for Céline and her family, it will also be good for Las Vegas also...  Like said nobody has ever achieved such a stunt like Céline did for 5 years, some have tried, nobody has succeed.  Céline Dion is and will remain a name that can attract thousands of people to a show...  It's a very good addition for Las Vegas.  Céline can be someone who can drag a family over the line to come to Vegas...  You know, father wants to go to Vegas to gamble a bit, but mother and daughter aren't to happy about it but they like a good show and maybe Céline can drag those families to Vegas, those who wanted to go to Vegas but had no decent reason to go...  Some will gamble others wont but it will generate revenue for Las Vegas...  Céline has her visitors and Las Vegas attracts more people...  We know it can work because it happened before and yes even in those days of economic recession people still want to go on a holiday...  And since the prices in Vegas have dropped and fewer people are going to Vegas Céline can be a new start for Las Vegas, the beginning of a new future of this marvelous city in the desert...

And last but not least the fans...  I admit, it's easier to go to a show when she's in the neighbourhood and probably even cheaper...  But in the end Las Vegas is fairly reachable for a lot of people on this planet.  Flights can be cheap if you look for it and even hotels can be very, very cheap...  It doesn't have to cost a leg you know ;)  If you look you can find very decent deals...  And there will be a guarantee that she will be there for a certain amount of time...  So if someone really want to go he or she can save for it, there will be plenty of time and oppurtunities to see her perform.  And it can be combined with a lovely holiday to relax a bit... ;)

And even for her career it can and will be a good thing...  Let's be honest, she has reached the ultimate top which can be reached...  She doesn't have to prove anything anymore...  A New Day was a big succes and even if the new show isn't that big it will be a succes even is she doesn't sell out night after night, day after day, month after month, year after year...  (Although it probably will sell out on the most dates since there will be probably fewer shows) A New Day was new, it was unseen and therefor it has reached a top wich probably can't be reached anymore with a new show...  Not by Céline and probably not by any other artist.  However I am certain that a new show will be a tremendous success but maybe on another scale...  There are plenty of possibilities to make a new show to a success.  And I'm very certain that it will be so ;)

Yes, some fans will say it will end her career or at least ruin it but in the end I don't think this will happen and even if it happens I don't think Céline would mind it at all, she's reached goals which few have reached and she can be proud of it...  There is less that she doesn't have reached so maybe it's indeed time to take a step back, settle down a bit and become a regular mother with a regular job and enjoy her life to the fullest...

Personally I hope she will return to Las Vegas for some shows, it doesn't have to be as big as AND but it will be great... ;)

Just my 2 cents ;)

Don't you guys think that the fact that Celine is skinny is an issue here? Wasn't Maria Callas overweight at some stage? Her weight played a big  role in her life... I don't know but that is what I think.

:sofunny: Well they have all kinds of suits and costumes and makeup available, they'd probably get some of that, I guess? Like they did on Friends when they had the "flashback" scenes with Monica. That'd be my guess anyway.

But I really hope the movie idea did die, and that it stays dead forever.  ^_^

Yeah, but costumes are still not always that convincing. A lot of time actors are required to add some weight for certain roles. Think about ''Monster'' for instance.
Why don't you like the movie idea?

I haven't seen Monster, so I can't comment on that. :( I've seen some convincing ones, and some not so convincing ones. I guess that'd be for the directors and Celine to decide. It actually really worries me when actors and actresses gain or lose weight for roles. I just don't think people should mess with that, it's not healthy. It's not worth it. :(
I don't like the movie idea because a) Celine's fascination with Maria Callas freaks me out, and b  ) I really really hate opera music. I can't even listen to La Diva without feeling like I need to pour sand in my ears to block out the noise. Sorry, just my opinion!

Well that was my point. That might be one of the reasons they decided not to do it. I have to admit the idea of gaining or losing weight for a role also freaks me out...

I wouldn't worry too much about that. It would be a triumphant chapter in Céline's career. There are body suits and makeup for special effects today.  As Callas was thin for the latter portion of her hile (and most famous), I'm sure Celine's physique would work.

I LOVE "La Diva!"

I just Googled a bit, and apparently she was about 200lbs at one point. Which is fine for people whose bodies are naturally like that, but I don't think Celine could gain that much weight even if she tried! I don't think they'd decide not to do the movie for that reason, though. They'd find a way around it if everything else fell into place.

I also like the Maria Callas movie idea. As long as they don't make her gain weight and things like that...

I'm excited to see what the set list for the new show will be like. I'm sure it will be similar to AND and TC, but it will have some differences like they all do. :D

Elton John ends Vegas run, but leaves door open

LAS VEGAS (AP) The Rocket Man said Wednesday night that he doesn't necessarily think it'll be a long, long time before he comes back to Las Vegas.

Elton John bid farewell to the Las Vegas Strip after five years and 241 shows at Caesars Palace, thanking audience members for seeing the show and producers for making it a one-of-a-kind spectacle.

''I really have enjoyed every single moment of this engagement,'' the five-time Grammy winner said after opening the show with ''Bennie and the Jets.''

Wearing a bright red shirt that matched his piano and a coat emblazoned with ''Las Vegas Pirates'' on its back and ''Captain Elton'' on its right sleeve, John rolled through his hits and reflected on his time at the Colosseum, a stage he famously shared with Celine Dion, Bette Midler and Cher.

''The ex-home of Celine Dion ... and now it's the ex-home of Elton John as well,'' the 62-year-old said. John said later in the show that he'd like to see Dion play the venue again.

''Who are you going to get to fill in our shoes now?'' he said. ''You've got Bette Midler, you've got Cher. It's gonna be the Village People next.''

John initially signed on for 75 shows over three years when his run began in February 2004, but casino officials say the deal was expanded because of demand.

John's tour with Billy Joel has the second-highest average gross box office revenue with a ticket price of $115.84, according to Pollstar, the concert industry trade publication. Each show averages a gross $2.2 million, behind only Britney Spears, Pollstar said.

Many audience members seated close to the stage Wednesday night gave the pop singer a standing ovation after each hit he played, including ''Candle in the Wind,'' ''Rocket Man'' and ''Tiny Dancer.''

Several of the songs were combined with complex video productions created by famed photographer and director David LaChapelle. The offbeat music videos included appearances by singer Justin Timberlake, actress Pamela Anderson and actor Paul Reubens.

''One day I might even see you in Vegas, OK? But until then, I love you,'' John said before ending the show with ''Your Song'' and kissing an audience member's hand as he exited the stage.

''I hope you don't mind that I put down in words,'' he sang. ''How wonderful life is while you're in the world.''

Hmm... he prefers Céline over Bette & Cher? :P

Brainstorming who’s in and out as Elton John departs The Colosseum

By John Katsilometes · April 23, 2009 · 12:36 AM

Before the giant, phallic apples-and-banana stage prop was deflated for the 241st and final time, Elton John plugged the Village People.

“Who’s going to fill my shoes?” Sir Elton asked. “You’ve got Bette Midler and Cher. Next, it’ll be the Village People.” Is this such a bad idea? The Colosseum is losing Elton John, whose “Red Piano” performances played for 4½ years and was a commercial and creative success in a 4,000-seat venue whose ticket prices (topping out at $225 apiece) were among the highest on the Strip. It’s a limited field of candidates that could replace him, no question. Anyone’s list should include Elton himself, as he not so subtly claimed near the end of the show. “I’ll see you with Billy Joel, and by myself, and one day I might even see you back in Vegas.”

But until then, how do you fill those 4,000 seats? I imagine, while typing, the meeting of AEG Live/Concert West executives as they sort out who makes the vaunted “short list” of performers considered to play The Colosseum:

Executive I: OK, again, we are meeting to sort out who makes the vaunted “short list” of performers to play The Colosseum …

Executive II: Celine Dion!

Executive I: … and we need to think out of the box on this one. First, nobody is permitted to use the term, “out of the box.”

Executive II: OK! I’m thinking out of the … out of the crate here. How about the Village People?

Executive I: Elton mentioned that from the stage in his last show, but I think he was joking.

Executive II: I know I laughed.

Executive I: The Village People are so past it. The Village People are so old, the military guy actually stormed Normandy!

Executive II: They’re so old, the American Indian guy posed for the Buffalo nickel!

Executive III: You know who’s not old? Celine Dion!

Executive I: What about Billy Joel?

Executive II: We didn’t start the fire!

Executive I: What! What fire?

Executive II: That’s his song. And, I love you just the way you are.

Executive I: You need a vacation.

Executive III: You know who’s on vacation? Celine Dion!

Executive I: I like Billy Joel. Note that. Do not note the Village People, unless we can package them with KC & The Sunshine Band and maybe Tavares for an All-Disco Extravaganza!

Executive II: Hey, here’s another thought: Stevie Wonder.

Executive I: Has he ever seen The Colosseum?

Executive II: What the hell are you talking about?

Executive I: Oh. Sorry. But I saw him play “Superstition” on “Sesame Street” when I was a kid, so he’s in.

Executive II: I can see it -- “Songs In the Key of Live!” It’ll be great. Note that!

Executive I: What about going in more of a folksy direction with, say, Simon & Garfunkel?

(Sounds of silence)

Executive I: We might have to alert security.

Executive II: Why?

Executive II: So they won’t arrest them for loitering.

Executive I: But if we can get David LaChappelle to work his wizardry with the video screens, and get the dancers we had before …

Executive III: With – who, kids? Who? Celine Dion.

Executive I: … Simon & Garfield might work, with that kind of staging. They have a ton of hits. Note that – Simon & Garfunkel. Anything else?

Executive II: Hey, Jimmy Buffett does ridiculous ticket sales.

Executive I: Yes, but those fans. … and we thought Cher’s fans dressed weird.

Executive II: We’d have to make sure the Parrot Heads and Cher fans are never allowed in the hotel at the same time. The place might implode.

Executive I: We’d have to put the gift shop on the roof, too, give ’em a Congo-line destination. But note that – I like me my Jimmy!

Executive II: What about Donny & Marie?

Executive I: Brilliant! They could fill the theater just with family members.

Executive II: They’re at the Flamingo now. They are already residents, and we could have a rotating group of lesser Osmonds join them onstage. Note that!

Executive I: My list tops out with Rod Stewart.

Executive II: Lots of hits, great performer – when he shows up to sing, anyway. But I’m iffy on his age. What’s he, 70?

Executive I: He’s 62 – same age as Elton, actually.

Executive II: Hmmmmm. OK, note that. Rod Stewart. But we have to tell him to go easy on the standards, which will make him seem really old.

Executive III: You know who’s not old?

Executive I: Celine Dion?

Executive III: Yes!

Executive I: We have to keep Celine on the list, for sure. Elton, too. What’s the term we use for them?

Executive III: “We are leaving the door open.”

Executive I: Damn straight. Note that!

:P

Well who wouldn't prefer Celine over those other gals?  LOL.  I was so disappointed when I saw Cher's show.  But of course, all the Cher fanatics were down in the front, cheering to their diva.  The show was just so loose and not that very well thought out.  Think her farewell tour, but with more costume changes and less songs.  I was, however, impressed with her singing.  She sounded better than ever.  I was there when she slipped and fell on-stage, and it seemed pretty obvious she was singing live... we could all hear the little squeal come out of her when she fell, but then she pulled it off pretty darned well, I will give her that.  But the entire time, I kept thinking "this isn't a show, it's a concert, and not a very good one."

As Elton has just wrapped up his Vegas run, and Cher is to finish hers in December.... I bet the pressure is on for Caesars to fill their shoes and quick!!!

I think it was great for Elton to say he'd also like to see Celine back at the Colosseum, and although Celine is off enjoying her vacation and trying to hopefully get pregnant again...
I'm sure both she and Rene and feeling a bit of pressure, regarding this subject also....

I guess the next few months will tell all! :)

Darren.
