The other big release of the week, Led Zeppelin's Mothership, is at number four, behind Celine Dion's Taking Chances.

Lewis, 22, winner of last year's X Factor, is already celebrating after her single, Bleeding Love, became the biggest selling song of the year on Sunday. It has sold 111,978 copies over the last seven days.

HMV's Gennaro Castaldo said: "Leona's success is all the more remarkable as this is a huge week for Christmas releases, with heavyweight albums from the likes of the Spice Girls, Led Zeppelin and Celine Dion.

"There has been a growing feeling over the past few weeks that this album would be huge, particularly following the success of Bleeding Love and the impact of Leona's appearance on X Factor. But, if anything, Spirit may even go on to exceed these high expectations.

"Who could have predicted Leona would have come back from her year away in such dramatic style - that's' some superstar makeover she's been through!"

So Céline is at #3 at the moment..

Yeah but when Leona can sell 2 albums with over 20 million copies worldwide in a row, she can have bragging rights.  This is Celine's 40th album, we can't expect crazy numbers!

#3 is a fantastic result and genuinely a realistic result. Leona and The Spice Girls were always going to fight it out for the top 2 positions. As we saw with the single last week though sales fell away after the first few days so let's hope sales of the album can be sustained for the week.

This is great news if they reckon Leona is going to sell more than 350 000 copies then celine will sell between 70 & 80, which is more than enough on a normal week to get to number 1.

WORLDWIDE I definately think Celine will be Number 1 think about it these figures are likely

USA - 450 000
Uk  - 70 000+
Canada - 100 000
France 100 000

Once you add all the other countries we are looking at about 750 000 copies in the  first week. Watch this space

Roger is a tool. Its ok. Hes paid to say what he says. Hes the one Clive Davis had open his mouth about Kelly Clarkson's record and caused it to be dead on arrival. So hopefully it wont take a bashing on Celines sales status for the week, but I dont think it will. Shes had very good promo I think for her. Shes a legend and a lifer in the business so she wont get as much promo as some other newer faces. So I think so far SonyBMG has done fairly well in letting the world know Celines got a new record coming out. Alicia Keys is under Clive Davis, so he may be trying to get his other discovery to top the charts and generate his greedy money hungry #ss some more green. Clive has nothing to do with Celine, so thats why Roger dissed her so much. Just to clear that up. The Kelly Clarkson fans did some intense investigating into this moronic Roger guy. He's almost like a puppet for the music world.

i know we can't learn a thing from it regarding her first week numbers in the u.s but i still hope for a miracle somehow...i soooooooooooo want to see her debuts at #1

What type of promotion do you want sony uk to do?

They created a microsite because we asked for one, the album was album of the week on bbc radio 2 last week, shes already been to the uk tv herself promoting, the advert is on tv, and outside promotion like posters and the torch on the motorway here are about to start promoting the album also.

They have done quite well so far regarding the album promotion.

well i've seen the album advertised on television once and that was when you told us it would be on around Coronation Street time.

I would like a few radio adverts, it takes me around 40 minutes in the car to get to work, then another 40 to get back. So far i haven't heard anything.

Maybe some billboards on the roads would be good. etc.

As for the website, it's somewhat useless unless the person is actually searching for it!

Ive just heard there will be no radio adverts in the uk for the album, but apparently outdoor promotion will now start around the 1st week in december...  around the time when ''an audience with celine'' airs, so this will hopefully give the album a huge boost for xmas and could hopefully have celine being the uk no.1 album at crimbo.

In a way its quite smart because the competition in the uk this week is probably the hardest she has to compete with in the world...
So in a few weeks when the hype of leona, spice girls and kylie has died down, we will have celine back on uk tv, with billboards and posters and tv ads all over the uk.

Absolutely Darren.

It's quite clear that Sony UK are doing pro-longed promotion with this album and not just during release week like they did with A New Day Has Come, One Heart and Miracle. They are to be commended for that. I just hope the album is also supported in the long term with singles as well as media advertisements, but credit where it's due, Sony UK are doing a good job on UK promo.

even though, they will do a long term promotion but the 1st week of sales is important also, if she gets the #1 spot, the people might think once again, OMG celine's album must be good cause it is #1 and might go and buy it

Leona is the English equivalent of Kelly Clarkson... She's the first winner of XFactor and English people all want her to do well. Same as Kelly Clarkson many years ago. Now she's getting a free ride in terms of promo and music critics, but once the novelty wears off, she will have to work harder to promote and sell her music... Just like Celine now.  

After so many years, it's still quite impressive if Celine gets a Top 5 debut in the UK, mainly during this REALLY tough week to release an album in the UK. I really wonder why Sony let Celine and Leona release their album during the same week...   Seems to me that many people don't want Celine to be successful... but once again she show them!!

Today was the US release date for Taking Chances! ahhhhhhhh   GO CELINE!  She is on top of her game.  This goes back toa different topic, about her taking a break... I wish she would rest ... but she is doing so wonderfully!  Celine is SUPER WOMAN!
