Show Evolution: Celine Dion has grown into 'A New Day'
(2:00 p.m. GMT) If you waited this long to see Celine Dion at Caesars Palace, you probably waited too long. At least you'll miss "A New Day." There are 12 more performances through Oct. 14, then another 13 from Nov. 29 to Dec. 15, before the Canadian superstar moves on to a world tour and new challenges. Each of the 25 shows is sure to bring an early Christmas to ticket brokers on the "secondary market." The marketing blitzkrieg that's sure to surround the Nov. 13 arrival of her new album, "Taking Chances," will only rub your face in it.

But take heart, fans. Returning to the Colosseum last week after a mere 10-day break, the singer told the audience, "This is what I'm missing." This late in the game, people might presume she's "been there, done that," Dion volunteered. But the truth, she claimed, was that even a short absence made the heart grow fonder. "I have a solution," Dion added. "You should come with me (to the recording studio)." Here's another solution. The speech can support a theory that's been floated, and now can be fueled by the producers still not owning up to Cher as a future attraction. Is it possible that once she unpacks the suitcase again, Dion might carry on at the Colosseum?

It would be easy to return on a more casual and occasional basis, minus the cast of 50 dancers and the theatrical production numbers. Judging by their response, fans wouldn't feel ripped off if there was less dancing and more "Oprah"-style patter. The mere admission that the star has learned to enjoy the routine is the biggest change since the show opened in March 2003. During the media frenzy surrounding the launch, Dion seemed to be a passive force in this giant endeavor; more fulfilled by being a new mom than the applause that provides the life force of many a Vegas trouper. But she grew into "A New Day" over the years, and for better or worse the show evolved into more of the diva showcase people expected at the outset: an upscale pop show with some artsy flourishes, not the swing-for-the fences collaboration with Cirque du Soleil director Franco Dragone that often tried too hard.

Some early mistakes disappeared quickly. It's been a long time since Dion flew on a harness rigging, or dressed up like the "Pat" character on "Saturday Night Live," with slicked-back hair and hitched-up, man-boy suspenders. The singer now sports long hair, a soft look and several displays of evening attire. Musicians join her onstage instead of hiding under the giant space station of a stage. Other changes replaced the audacious with safe and sure-footed, but more ordinary choices. The show now opens with -- wouldya believe it? -- the title song "A New Day" instead of the solitary, a capella take on "Nature Boy." The standards "Fever" and "At Last" were replaced in May 2006 with a now-common tech trick, splicing in Frank Sinatra to help croon "All the Way."

And the homestretch now celebrates the cast as a bonded unit with the Ike & Tina Turner classic "River Deep, Mountain High." Dragone would have found it cheesy back in '03. Now, he probably realizes the show needed an energy that had been stifled in its overproduced infancy. The world's largest hi-def screen no longer steals the show as it did before Best Buy shoppers knew the difference between a 720p and 1080p TV. But Dragone's elegant spectacle still makes the jaw drop now and then: The Magritte paintings coming to life while Dion croons "If I Could" on the stage steps, or the "floating bride" in front of a rolling moon for "My Heart Will Go On."

That's the last song now, and I kind of miss the old encore, "What A Wonderful World." "A New Day" opened the week of the Iraq invasion, so Dion gave it a bittersweet twist that served as a daily reminder; her version of "Tie A Yellow Ribbon." The singer spoke from her heart on opening night, and again when Katrina struck New Orleans. A war that's outlasted a long run in Vegas may not send gamblers back to the tables full of feel-good escapism, but it's worth mentioning maybe 25 more times.

One point is very interesting : The show was at first sold as a Cirque du Soleil type of thing and Celine appeared as a new showgirl with shorthair and jumpsuits. But it really became a Diva show, something Celine is very used to, her well known peformer side with long dresses and big hair etc. Im wondering what Franco Dragone thinks about what ''his'' show has become from march 03 to december 07.

And if she misses the encore of WAWW that much, then why did they cut it? It was a perfect ending; intimate, touching, a comeback of the mirror before ANDHC. Like all the pieces of the show back together to say thank you goodnight. I always thought that ending the show on MHWGO was kind of cold considering the playback but mostly because of this huge too much heard hit of 1997...

Anyway viva the world tour!!

Wonderful, and very accurate, article.

The show was marketed as an addition to the Cirque family and everyone connected quickly realised the mistake. The show as it is now has Celine Dion stamped all over it and is much the better for it.

I much prefer the song line up as it was when the CD came out, it had a GREAT range of songs. I thought "All The Way" was a crummy touch up and getting rid of songs was sad.

A NEW DAY was a huge success in the history of music, but I am more excited for Celine's future projects.  She is broken out of a mold and ready to try new things.  Her last 2 tours before AND needed something extra, but I think she'll finally have it for the world tour.  I hope she dances and wows us with it.  I'm sure she will.

Oh, my God... It's coming to an end... I don't feel sad at all, because I know that Celine achieved so many good things when performin' in Vegas and I also know that all those achievements have been the greatest ones of her career. Celine's become the QUEEN of Vegas and that's the most important thing to consider. All of us know that many more great times are still to come... :thumbsup2:

CELINE, I'M SO PROUD OF LOVING YOU.

This has got to be one of, if not THE, best articles about the show.  Every single thing the author wrote I pretty much agreed with.

Franco Dragone is a visionary, I agree.  Heck, he's inspired me to create show productions ideas (click here to see the Celine concepts) for numerous artists and helped shape my imagination to lengths that I didn't know existed.

However, there were many things I feel that he and his team overlooked during the production of this show.  There were too many covers and not enough Celine originals.  The show, which is titled A New Day..., opened to media and audiences without the song, "A New Day Has Come."  There were too many ballads.  I love ballads.  "My Heart Will Go On" is "my song."  However, the audiences coming to see this show weren't just the Celine ballad lovers.  They were gamblers, business(wo)men, and casual tourists.  These types of people, I've found, want more energetic numbers to get their blood racing.  Though a cover, it was nice to see the addition of "River Deep, Mountain High."

I believe that "All The Way" was a nice touch to the show.  Frank Sinatra was a big influence on Vegas, not to mention the song is Celine and René's song.  It may not "connect" to every person, but it does to Celine and René.  And quite frankly if I were to do a show such as A New Day... I'd want to perform a song that is close to my heart just to help make each night seem more special than the "norm."

There have been many positive things that have come to A New Day... throughout the years of its running (costume changes, altering of the presentation of "Pour que tu m'aimes encore" to include the picture frames, the addition of "River Deep, Mountain High," the ability to be intimate and personal with Celine, etc.)  There have also been some negative drawbacks as well (the shortening of the setlist, the show being too scripted at times - which is to come with a show of this magnitude I understand, not enough new material brought to the show through the years, etc.)  However, the show has stood the test of time and proven that it and Celine are a force not to be messed with.

I will cherish the memories I have shared with friends and family while at this show.  I will always remember the staff and crew of the show whom I met who made a lasting impression (Usher Cassidy for being so wonderful and getting me my backstage tour).  Having the chance to meet up with the dancers, singers, and band members after a night's performance ended.  I remember getting the chance to meet up with Barnev, Celine's backup singer, and talking to him about some of the ideas I mentioned above I had for the show.  He was incredibly nice and took my packet and gave it to Franco to look at.  It was soon after that when the "Unison" rap appeared in the show.  Granted, not in the fashion I had envisioned or submitted to Franco and his team, but it was a nice nod nonetheless.  This moment has touched my heart in so many ways.

I hope Celine does come back to Vegas even if to do a "ONE NIGHT ONLY" type show.  The setting suits her.  She is a wonderful and talented woman.

I know!  Time has flown by so fast!  I can't believe the show will be shuttering soon!

"Tie A Yellow Ribbon" is a term used when people tie yellow ribbons around their trees to give honor and support for people who have served and/or fallen during times in the military services.
