玛莉亚·卡拉斯（Maria Callas）生于1923年12月2日，与提芭蒂同为本世纪最伟大的花腔女高音，尤其是卡拉斯更以圆润的歌声风靡于世。卡拉丝出生于美国纽约，双亲是希腊人，十三岁时随同父母返回希腊，进入雅典音乐学院师从希达戈（女高音）。十五岁时，在雅典皇家歌剧院演出歌剧：乡村骑士，是首次公演。一九四七年在维洛纳剧院演出歌剧《乔康达》，被名指挥家塞拉凡提拔，她在威尼斯菲尼其剧院演出华格纳歌剧《崔斯坦与伊索迪》中的伊索德一角，演出后大为轰动，以后便在意大利歌剧中担任第一女高音，她的歌唱生涯自此辉煌灿烂。

    　卡拉丝曾与大富豪梅奈基尼结婚，不久即告仳离，后来又与希腊船王欧纳希斯传出绯闻并且常发生拒绝演出的事件，关于她的逸闻特别多。卡拉丝中年以后因声带不适而退隐巴黎，一九七七年时心脏病发作而去世，结束了她华丽的一生，享年五十四岁，但坊间传说，她是死于“心”己“碎”，因为她视欧纳希斯为一生中挚爱，结果欧纳希斯却娶了甘乃迪遗孀贾桂琳。

    卡拉丝拿手的曲目是贝里尼的歌剧《诺玛》、凯鲁碧尼的歌剧《麦迪亚》、威尔第的歌剧《麦克白》等，除此，她为《茶花女》录制了七种不同的全曲版本，先不论其艺术成就，光是以次数而论已是众女伶中之第一！
