Besides, Bette has been in show business for 40 years and you say she doesn't have staying power....are you being serious? She's won Grammy Awards, Tony Awards, Emmy Awards, been Oscar nominated and still appears in big Hollywood films and Caesars Palace would not offer her a contract if they didn't think for one minute she wouldn't be able to last. With Cher and Elton on rotation they've basically created a star-studded, crowd pulling trio and that alone is a big selling point. Bette will be fine, no question about it.

I was about to say the same thing.  Bette's career started the year Celine was BORN, and she's still going strong.

I'd just like to add a picture that I took in Vegas from one of the casinos (can't remember which)

Classic Vegas Legends.  Who's that in between Tom Jones and Prince?  Oh yeah, it's The Divine Miss M herself.

As much as I hate to say it, Vegas isn't going to fold when Celine leaves. Entertainment is going to keep on thriving here just like it was before Celine. I don't think there's any reason to get down on Bette. They wouldn't put her there if there was any question whether she'd sell tickets. The average Vegas tourist isn't a Celine fan necessarily, it's middle aged people from the midwest or wherever. Celine could pull them in and so can Bette. There have never been shows that aren't awesome in the Colosseum, and I doubt they're about to start with Bette. And if you want to talk longevity, Bette obviously takes Celine. I'm sure Celine will still be having all the success in the world when she's Bette's age.... but who's already done it? Bette, not Celine. And it's not a diss against Celine that Bette's show costs more... if Celine's show started today I'm sure the price point would be at least as much as Bette's.

Honestly, Bette could have the craziest production show out there, and Celine could sit on the stage for 90 minutes knitting a sweater, and I would rather be at Celine's show any day... and probably most of us would! we're not the best ones to judge replacements for Celine because for us there is never going to be a replacement good enough. Bette's an awesome performer - she's known for it. I'm sure her show is going to be amazing and do the Colosseum justice  :flowers:

sure, I'd like to stick a celine statue in the middle of the stage for everyone to work around for eternity, too, because, for us, the whole place is her baby and everyone else is just an intruder... but i mean... sadly i don't call the shots over there :P

I have to agree with what Erin said. Of course it's sad to see Celine finish her run in LV but it would have to end sometime, and it's already gone on longer than originally anticipated. I think most of the millions of people that have attended her show have just been casual fans or non-fans who just wanted to see the "hot" show. The true fans, like us, have probably made up a minority of those numbers. The good thing is that I think her show has converted a lot of "non-fans" to actually becoming real fans and hopefully exploring more of her music.

I think Better Midler is a good choice for the upcoming year. She is extremely talented and the stage and background effects will work really well for her show. I don't think they will ever get one person to have shows over four or five years like Celine had at that venue. I think they will just keep going with a rotation of artists. Who else would do a show for that long?!

Las Vegas is about change. They are always knocking down buildings and creating new ones. I just hope that someday Celine will come back for at least a few weeks to play at the venue that was created for her.  -_-

- That is what I wanted to say when I said that nobody could "replace" Celine. When I saw 2 years for Bette -then I though "Oh that's okay". Nobody will be there for 5 years like Celine did.

Yes, I really hope so!
And for me, none of those shows would make me want to go to Vegas. I don't like those kind of shows at all heheh I love Cirque du Soleil.
Yeah I think Vegas won't be the same - for Celine fans - after Celine leaves. I know it's very exciting to know that she's going on tour next year and all that... and the show got shorter throughout the years and that there's no communication with the fans as it used to happen in the past - her speeches are the same over and over again like a robot heheh -- but even though I get very excited for her tour -- I 'll miss Vegas and I still think Vegas is the best, ever. Best theater, small venue, amazing show, we can plan on going whenever we want, we can see the show as many times as we can afford, we can see Celine close, etc.
Well, a new begin will star soon heheh

Yeah it has been nice to be able to see Celine in her "home" in the last few years. The theater is just the right size for that show. When she tours I doubt she will be doing any venues as small as four thousand people so you won't feel as close. I would think she will be playing different songs, or at least I hope she does! One advantage when she goes on tour is most people attending will be Celine fans, as opposed to Las Vegas where it was more of a mix of true fans, non-fans, and people that wandered in drunk!

Hold on a minute, on one hand you're saying you ignored the haters and on the other your hating on Bette. So I guess we can all ignore you then, right?   And Celine's fans believing in her isn't even the point. The point I was making is that everyone else said she would fail so we should know better when others try the same thing. Besides, Bette has been in show business for 40 years and you say she doesn't have staying power....are you being serious? Thomas first and foremost i am a Celine fan so yes i ignored the haters of Celine. and i wasnt hatin' on bette. i just don't like her style. she's gawdy and tacky and tasteless.  and there's no way i would shell out good money to see her show. as someone said i would rather to see Celine sit and knit on stage for 2 hours than see 62 year old bette trying to act slim and sexy

are you gone mad out of your rocker. Bette didn't have a "career" for about 20 years. she couldnt evenb get arrested. after she sang "the rose"  she went out of the limelight for about20 years until a producer gave her a chance to make a comeback ina movie called , "beverley hills..something or the other i cant remeberthe name now., so dont make it look like bette was up there consistently at the top, because everybody knows thats not true.  :whistling:  andyou cantsay bette had "all the success" because like i said shehad several down pit periods during her career and shes been around longerthan Celine yes because she is older  maybe??  :whistling:

i dont think so at all. everyday thousands of fans flock to see Celine from all over the world. some have been saving up for years to see her show and pay for their plane ticket.

A final word about bette and why i dont like her. she comes across as sleazy, tacky, gawdy, self indulgent, self-proclaimed diva; truth be told she doesn't really have a good singing voice, she's overweight and acts like she's some slender young tart when she's  stuffed into her costume and held in by a rigid corsette       .    she speaks badly of other celebrities and she doesnt seem to be a big fan of Celine. And for the likes of me this broad sings in a brothel or a bathhouse where people have sex and spread diseases. it seems  low, sleazy and dirty..and she's proud of it..   :w00t: i dont  get that . when i think of  bette i think 'sleazy tramp. ' sorry guys. ok let me have it

seriously.

i'm not a bette fan, but she's going to put on a good show. there's no way around it - they wouldn't have brought her on if they couldn't put together a great show around her and sell the hell out of it.

i don't care if i'm 'mad out of my rocker' - i'm not going to hate on another artist. they all have my respect. it's not their fault they're not celine  :giggle:

is celine going to trash talk bette? no way in hell. why should we? don't we have more class than that?

I don't even think of anyone really replacing Celine. They will have Better, Elton, maybe Cher for awhile and at some point they will have different artists. I rather have them, then someone like Britney Spears. I hope that NEVER happens! Everyone has there own wish list of who should be next. Although it would have been nice if Celine was staying on in LV for maybe another year it's probably better that she is moving on. I'm sure at this point she is getting tired of the doing mostly the same songs and shows for so long, even though they have done
some updates.

Now she can move on with new songs and a big tour and a lot of the people that could not get to LV will finally get to see her.  :thumbsup2:

I'm not a fan but I'm sure she can put on a fantastic show.  :thumbsup2:
She is a singing actress so the show is going to be more like a musical I think...

Céline opened doors for so many artists, Vegas isn't so "dirty" anymore, it's now a huge opportunity for the music world. I think Las Vegas will always be grateful for Céline and the team, because of them Vegas isn't just a place to where artists come to sing after their active years, it's not a place where singers, who didn't succeed, try to make money singing in the smokey bars. Céline is and will always be the icon, for sure...but that doesn't mean that other artists can't try their luck. I think it's fantastic that more and more singers come to Vegas and put on a show. It doesn't matter if the show is sold out like A New Day, but you never know. Look what happened to Céline...no one really believed her (except the fans..lol..), she didn't care about others, she had a dream and she proved all the grey-haired critics wrong. hah.

it's sad that people are coming and taking the Colosseum as their home, but Céline can't stay there forever..I'm sure no one wants that. She's got to move on. I'm really happy that A New Day has been sold out and it's a huge success..and I think that show is irreplaceable. It is and will be THE Show, it's part of the Vegas history.

I wish good luck to Bette.  :flowers:

the thing that bothers me is that they (the celebrities and show biz world) are not going to give Celine credit as the innovator who paved the way for all the others who followed in LV. i remember seeing an interview with Barry manilow on tv on some talk show about how hes's going to do a contract singing in LV. not once did he give Celine credit but mentioned some other artist, (elton johni believe) about them doing the vegas gig and getting advice from them . that PISSED me off so much.   :nono:

Vegas diva swap
Bette replaces Celine, Curve gets schooled and Tori is penning a musical

Friday, May 11, 2007

The Divine Miss M, BETTE MIDLER, is headed to that epicenter of class and style, Las Vegas.

Midler will replace the greatest singer in the world, CELINE DION as headliner for Caesars Palace’s 4,100 seat Colosseum.

“The stage is so enormous there’s a terror that you might not be able to fill it all by your lonesome, you know, a little person in high heels,” Midler said, according to Reuters. “It’s got the biggest [video wall] in the world and you say, ‘What the heck am I going to put on that? My baby pictures?’”

Dish hopes so. She loves scrapbooking.

Dion managed to sell out nearly all 160 shows for each of the four years she’s been there, grossing more than $500 million. Midler won’t quite mimic Dion’s grueling schedule. Instead, her two-year contract requires 100 shows per year in 20-week blocks with five shows per week.

“That’s really what made me decide it was going to be fun,” Midler said. “I have a child in school, and I have a lot of commitments here in New York City. I like the idea of being able to come and go.”

Dish suspects that even though Midler’s been saddled with a lighter load, desperate queens will fill up the Colosseum in a way they never did for Dion.

Speaking of things that interest the queens, ELTON JOHN still has 50 shows per year at Caesars running through 2008 and rumors that CHER will also be signed to work the Colosseum remain unconfirmed by spokespeople. Hmmm … unconfirmed is not the same thing as denial.

Midler’s show will run 90 minutes and cost between $95-$250 a seat.

:D :D :D :D

Apparently, Cher will NOT be performing at the Colosseum..

Quote

CHER DEAL DEAD?

Cher's deal with Caesars Palace has fallen through, and a search is back on for a new headliner to share the Colosseum with Bette Midler.

Meantime, I'm hearing Mariah Carey, the husband-wife superstar duo of Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, Stevie Wonder and Whitney Houston are in talks with local properties.

Cher, one of the biggest-selling artists of all-time, had announced more than a year ago on late-night television that she had a deal with Caesars Palace. But there have been rumblings that Caesars was backing away from the contract length she sought because she was overexposed from many "farewell" tours.

Caesars' response: "Can't confirm or deny."

Carey, Houston and Barbra Streisand are among a handful of female entertainers who are considered to be popular enough to fill the 4,000-seat Colosseum, which Dion has packed since 2003. She leaves Dec. 15, and Midler opens in February.

Barbra to Replace Celine in Vegas?

Posted by ExtraTV Staff on October 23, 2007 12:35 PM

Is Barbra Streisand heading to Sin City?

Rumors are swirling in Las Vegas that Babs is in talks to replace Celine Dion at Caesar's Palace.

Cher always lip-syncs? She can't sing "Believe" exactly like in CD.

Oh, no! I was hoping so much that Cher would be singing in the Colosseum after Celine. I don't want to seem disrespectful, but I believe Cher's a WAAAY better singer than Bette. I like Bette much more as an actress.
Love comes to those who believe it...

I really like Bette as a person, but I don't think she will sell seats anywhere near as good as Celine did. I guess they knew that and that is why they cut down her shows. This should be interesting to see unfold. I wish her the best though.

Well, they will be announcing Cher this week who will also be doing 100 shows a year at the Colosseum.. I plan to see both their shows and I am sure Cher may even have an elephant or two(don't know about that really) but nothing will ever come close to the class of Celine's show who didn't need half naked showgirls to draw the crowds in.
Now I AM glad I bought a piece of the TRUE Colosseum floor!
